Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Why the surprise?

Cisco acquired 10k including Splunk and LR’d roughly the same number. It’s to be expected

Always expect LRs right after acquisition.

FTFY. It's been 23 years. Figure it out.

It is. Cisco always takes opex out of hide for an acquisition. Always. Expect layoffs accordingly. It’s the business model. If you understand that, you’ll be a lot less stressed when it inevitably happens each year. Anyone remember “bottom-sixers “ those were the days…

Cisco has followed a pattern to adjust headcount after an acquisition to get the numbers more in line with what they were before the acquistion. At one point, I recall Cisco management did mention that they do this.

Totally agree. Acquisition is bad news. Always expect LRs right after acquisition.

If the original business is properly staffed and the acquired business is properly staffed it's not at all obvious that the equivalent number of staff from the acquired company must to be let go.

On the other hand, a company that has been doing continuous layoffs for coming up on 24 years, a layoff was definitely expected. We know there is still another $200B-$300B chambered for the next layoff and there is an extremely high probability there will be layoffs queued up for FY2026 regardless of acquisitions or ongoing hiring.

Zero growth tends to lead to restructuring
