Thread regarding Alteryx layoffs

People leaders are told to stackrank. Protect yourself.

Stack ranking, also known as forced ranking or ranking, is a highly controversial and often criticized performance evaluation approach that pits employees against each other in a zero-sum game.
Under this method, managers are instructed to rank their team members from top performer to lowest contributor, creating an environment of competition rather than collaboration.

If you're new to this approach, stack ranking is a performance evaluation system where employees are ranked against their entire team, rather than being assessed based on individual goals and standards.

In its classic form, it involves dividing the workforce into three groups: top performers who receive recognition and rewards (typically the top 20%), middle performers who require improvement but are retained, and underperforming employees who are at risk of termination (usually the bottom 10%)

O MY GOD. They are pitting people against each other. If your team has four people, guess what happens next quarter?

SC-MBAGS.

Yes. Which one of your co-workers would you, hypothetically, volunteer for a "special project"? How ready are you to throw them under the bus?😏

NONE. I don't want someone showing up to my door because they lost their income.

I rather quit. FT.

You need to field a complete team to win in tech.

Agreed. The management lacks a proper understanding of technology, yet they are paid wages that should be allocated to younger and tech-educated and experienced employees. It's quite irritating when our leaders assert that the youthful population doesn't comprehend business matters; this merely exacerbates the communication breakdown within the organization.

To management: You people, with your VP daddies and mommies, have destroyed the company. It's time to stop shifting blame onto young people and accept that you're no longer relevant in today's modern world.

If your manager begins discussing stack ranking, it's crucial to begin organizing your departure. The current climate is already intolerable, and this approach will push individuals to the brink of mental breakdowns.

This is yet another reason why it's imperative that folks move onto the next phase of their careers. Alteryx has shown that it won't take care of you, and now in employing an archaic, outmoded and divisive ranking and rating scheme, also shows that it is plummeting rapidly to the bottom. Time to move on, folks.

Stack ranking is also subjective. It is purely on how well you su-k di-k if your manager is non-technical. Which is most engineering managers at Fu-kteryx.

That's a recipe for people to band together and collectively sink the current leadership.

Bold move. Let's see how it plays out.

Be cautious about aligning with current leaders, who have little influence or power. No industry clout. Many of them are only employed because of connections or luck, and wouldn't stand out in today's competitive job world.

Expect things to get even dirtier.

Keep notes, take screenshots, and record every meeting. Remember, if HR is involved, it's their word against yours. Don't get caught off-guard. People leaders are well-equipped to pressure others into insanity.

As a leader for alteryx I have been asked to stack rank numerous times in good times. Knowing who your performers vs your clunkers is imperative to the health of your business.

You need to field a complete team to win in tech. Let's just keep all our starting right handed pitchers - that's what stack ranking does. I need a utility infielder and a DH to win and you just layed them off my team thanks to stack ranking and other Jack Welch area practices that destroyed the companies he managed. Look PEs just out for a payday so not much to really say. But yeah stacking ranking... sounds on par.

Issues with Stack Ranking

🚩Hinders Innovation and Teamwork: Stack ranking fosters a competitive rather than collaborative environment. Employees focus on outperforming their peers instead of working together, which can stifle creativity and innovation.
🚩High Turnover Costs: Employees rated in the bottom 10-15% face performance improvement plans or termination. This leads to significant turnover costs, estimated at 90-200% of an employee's annual salary when considering hiring and training expenses. Furthermore, losing experienced employees also means losing institutional knowledge and company culture.
🚩Promotes Toxic Culture: The individualistic nature of stack ranking breeds distrust among employees and between staff and management. This culture discourages open feedback and can lead to manipulation, negatively impacting morale and productivity.

Jesus Christ. WTF.
