Why no voluntary severances? I mean at the end of the day it’s win win. Are they worried they’ll only be left with a skeleton staff to get the work done?

Crazy times
They'll never do voluntary severance. There is always a "list" of staff they want gone. So when layoffs do come (rumor is mid November amongst management) this is a golden chance to get rid of those on your "list" without having to go through the headache of a PIP.
Sounds like there were layoffs this week in New Ventures!
IMHO there's no plan to do any layoffs. The company now is same as Husky then. It will get packed with more people while the oil price is favorable. The problem will start arising when oil price will start going down, but it may happen only if Trump will take over
Why this chatter regarding "voluntary severances"? Will there be layoffs in the foreseeable future? No rumours/talk at all about "employee reductions" in my group.
The other reason is that what's the likelihood that those who are over 50 and below 60 will take those voluntary packages? Less then those who are younger. At the end of the day if they do that they will end up with 'old fleet' that will be costly later on
If they offer voluntary severance all the talented staff will pocket the cash and have a job the next day. The trick to reducing headcount is the remove the unproductive employees not give the productive ones a golden parachute.
