Got a very senior job with a competitor. Planning to give my notice in 8 weeks. Is it OK to tell me boss my plans so they can give my stock bonus to the rest of the team? It would be a fair bit of money since we are one G12 and a ton of G8s.

Since you are going to a competitor I would say no. Lets say your have the conversation with your boss and he says where are you going? "I would rather not say" is dicey. They could try to insist. Remember the moment you tell them it is a competitor you are done. They pay out your notice. What you are trying to do is noble for sure but, I wouldn't do it.
I'd talk to HR about a voluntary separation. Maybe you can take a bucket of cash with you on the way out.
Too late unless you go talk to your VP, but many of them submitted yesterday.
OP you seem like a talented , genuine person who cares about your team. You will not get the same back though. It’s all about politics and LR’s. .Stick to 2 week notice, leave other details out .
@lgd+1uOoFBUX, apparently you can’t read. The OP wasn’t LR’d & has an offer from a competitor. By the time the next LR round comes around in Feb, that offer will be gone.
The OP is leaving at their choosing & timeframe, not Cisco’s, which is smart compared to risking competing w/ many others for an unknown number of jobs avail at the time Cisco chooses to LR them.
I guess if the OP had 25 yrs & would be giving up an extra 20 wks of severance, then maybe it would be worth just phoning it in until laid off. 8-10 months severance plus the initial 60 days is better than just 4 months.
Dont be a fool and give any notice. accept severance on last day and collect all your due.
Of course don’t ignore the possibility he or his boss will grab it for themselves or another favorite minion
I would tell them NOTHING. You don't owe them anything. They would LR you and not think twice. When I leave? Friday afternoon 4 PM they get my notice and Im gone.
Chuck wants your stock
That would be a thoughful action. I'd leave out the info about heading to a competitor. Cisco tends to walk people out the door immediately if they know you're headed to the competition.
I'd probably tell your boss "Hey, I just wanted to let you know I have an outside opportunity and will be leaving before the stock bonus cycle. Please give the stock to other people on the team. I'll be here for a while, but it'd probably be good to start working on transition plans for my work."
I wouldn't give them an exact time (timing can change). And I'd make sure I was 100% sure this opportunity will happen, before telling your boss at all.
