I was one of the better Modem engineers. My friend was the best in the industry. He contributed some of the specifications we know today.
As modem technology started to decline, I moved on and reinvented myself in the next growing area. My friend- the best engineer in the Industry - stuck with it.
One day he got LR’d and called me: “I am a better engineer than you are, why was I LR’d an not you?”.
I replied: “While I am not the best engineer, I am the most relevant engineer”
