Thread regarding Lumen Technologies layoffs

Ageism is a real thing

While they don't openly admit it, it must be part of the overall RIF strategy where many apply for a RIF and typically those picked are the older workers (50+) and especially those 60+.

There may be a more sinister side of how they get you ready for a RIF. Typically they take long time employees and move them into new groups and put them on 'dead end' projects and/or switch them into unsatisfactory projects (with the hope they will quit or retire) and if they do not, then pick them on the next RIF.

Rinse, repeat.

So unless you are well connected with a manager or VP who has your back, just remember your career is just one move away from being destroyed by LUMN and it's all part of the plan. You will end up in a RIF or quitting because they don't just destroy your career, they destroy your confidence. Leaving is the smart option at this point.

And then after you leave, if you decide you want to return to the workforce, you better be under 55 ... as most employers with open jobs will not hire you and typically only grant you a round one interview if you are lucky. This was a shocker but also a cold hard reality of the 2024 jobs market.

No wonder early retirement is a thing. It might be the only thing.

Lumen isn't the only place doing this, I suspect its commonplace.

Ageism is alive and real. I was with the company 25+ years and was RIF'd. The separation package has the ages of the people who were also cut. The next closest younger person was 49. Despite having the highest rating for my org, I was cut. It was a nice lump sum but not the way it was years ago where it was a full year or more as severance. I didn't want to go. There were reqs open elsewhere in the company. I miss the days when companies would fill the open reqs with people being cut, first, reducing the people hitting the street. Where's the loyalty? Sad how business ethics have gone down the toilet.

You mean that you miss the days when this was a real company. Considering the company has lost 75% of its Workforce and 90% of its original stocky valuation? That's a brilliant observation.

Look at the stock price now. As predicted by all the analysts, dropping off over a cliff. It's now rated a neutral with target $4. Thise who got in at 5 or 6 or 7 and still holding, su-kers.

Depends on when the AI bubble bursts. I think it has some legs left. Probably going to be when the semiconductor bubble bursts first, taking AI with it into the tank.

That's not always the case. Lu,en has skipped over people openly begging to be rif'd.

Hate to break it to you, but you're proving the company right that they don't need to give them out to keep people. The only way they'll learn is to walk. Collect a bigger paycheck at the same time.

The employee engagement index survey is NOT anonymous. They tell you that when you log in. Thats why I tell them things I WANT them to hear. No raise for 8 years? Yeah, im telling them that its indicative of a company not caring about their employees at all. I have and will continue to do so until I find my next place. I dare management to ask me about my comments. Go ahead, lets rumble.

It's why no one ever speaks up in meetings asking for employee feedback, employment engagement index is basically ppl lying since they don't trust it to be anonymous, etc. Don't stick your head up, don't put a target on your back, and so forth, that is the order of the day.

CEO and CFO are the leaders.
They have no rules.
Just look at our ancient politicians 😅

It doesn't matter how good you think you are. If you don't have the motivation. You're not it!“

Tell me again what age is our CEO & CFO?..

Age has nothing to do with motivation, plenty of senior techs who are supposedly fiber techs and are all about new technology,

are still working on Copper because the newer techs aren’t motivated to learn copper.. aren’t willing to get wet or be cold and are not willing to pay their dues as it were..

Hard times are coming for those who can’t see the reality of the situation..

“Ageism have been going on for 1000s of years.
It happens in the animal world.
Only the young, strong and the healthy wins.
Wisdom and knowledge means anything when your motivation isn't there.”

So what your saying is that’s it beneficial, that younger people seem to be in such a hurry to sc--w thing up, while it detrimental that the older people are pragmatic and like to look before they leap, interesting perspective.. ;-/

We all have to remember how we started.
As a young employee, we were all naive and vulnerable. Then the maturity sets in.
Employers don't see the same vision as you do.
They look far into the future and select the employees who will be there.
It doesn't matter how good you think you are. If you don't have the motivation. You're not it!

Well to Mr give youth the opportunity I’m not against it but when you have to work with one of them as a manager and they can’t fit their head thru the doorway Well then .. their mother didn’t raise them right …and they are rude ignorant prejudiced and you complain and he dies nothing …it’s a joke

Hands down, the worst company that I’ve ever worked for. There is so much favoritism shown. If you stand up to management and ask them to do the right thing, well count yourself gone!
A number of employees who are caught up in the RIF comes down to politics, you either play their game or you’re gone. Better to be gone and live amongst those with higher standards than to deal with Lumen politics.

The age thing has to do with health insurance costs, and nothing to do with allowing a younger more inexperienced low talent person to come in. UHC does not like a company who has a lot of well talented older people.

If you know nothing about AI, then it's likely the end of the road for you.

"I would give the youth the opportunity vs the seasoned employe"

Lol. Id--t. It obviously depends on the role. If you as a manager give youth the opportunity in a job which requires years of experience and you're setting yourself up to fail and wont be there long yourself. lol.

100% accurate and having a manager who has your back doesn't matter when its the vp pulling the strings.

I would agree with them.
I would give the youth the opportunity vs the seasoned employee.
If you neglected to build up your retirement. That's on you!

Boy you got that right. Working on all the inconsistent things here for years has me question what roles I would even be employable in.
