I am at JG14 and I felt it is the sweet spot. I know of colleagues who are 16 & 17, and often is complaining about their stress level But they forgot that they have been rightfully compensated already.

I agree with @5hnu+1uF4hClC

If you are young and don't have your own family, you can push hard to climb the work ladder now. But keep in mind your stress levels and remember that there is a difference between what the company pays for the work that you do and the accountability that you carry.

If you want to climb the JG ladder sustainably to your health, at JG11 you can hunt for roles of higher responsibility (be wary of them giving you more responsibility without a future road map to the next role, they will always want you to do more for free), take those roles when they come. Each role has an assigned JG, so you want to look for roles with a JG increase each step. It is alright to make a sidewards move, but only do it if you are trying to change function or business group/division because you essentially reset your track record at that JG when you move sideways.

Once you hit JG14, then it is about accountability, rather than the workload. You will end up spending more time ensuring your team is able to handle the work, achieve deliverables/targets etc. If anything goes wrong, you are on the line, not your team. That is when you get paid for accountability, but not work as much, outside of creating powerpoints and spreadsheets. The work you get is setting direction, aligning to company/VP's strategy, and reducing headcount (you don't get to choose, someone up the top who has no clue chooses who goes, sometimes they pick your best or most experienced worker!).

It is a crazy world that defies logic, you will feel a lot of anger, disillusion and sadness when you have to do this. So my advice is not to die/sacrifice for the company, because the company will never die for you. When you feel it is time to leave, find a role at a different company and go, taking the experience and position titles that you have gained at the company. Don't get Stockholm syndrome, don't let the company hold you hostage. You don't owe them anything.

Bear in mind. Higher responsibility means higher stress. Nothing comes free. If wants to take higher JG, be prepared to lick your superiors boots

You'll find that JG increases only come with role changes. I went to a JG12 and it took 3 years before I went to JG13 with a role change and a very supportive manager. Then it was JG13 all the way for 6 years until I had another role change before hitting JG14. So, I would advise that if you want to climb JG and salary quickly, always aim for positions of higher responsibilities and always ask "What would be the JG for a role like this?".

It all boils down to luck. I have a colleague who went from 12 to 16 within few years. You need to be able to say Yes.

I was stuck on JG13 for 10 years with no opportunities on sight. Just do the bare minimum. No point working hard to benefit your superiors. Those everyday win points are useless

Good. Luck. Been in an 11 for a long time. Everytime I ask about my 12 and what I need to do I am told I am doing an excellent job and no improvement suggestions. Just be happy you have a job.

$ Min = [Minimum]

MRef = [Market_Reference_Point]
105Cp = [105th Competitive]
$ Max = [Maximum]

As far as promotions go, I know they exist but they're so rare they may as well be mythical. Like Varys said, they happen maybe after 5 years, if you're on good terms with your boss, and they only ever happen once per role.

You can change jobs every 2-3 years to move up faster. HR frowns on it if you spend less than 24 months in a role and will outright block it if you try to move in less than a year (although it's more possible than getting a promotion).

Someone posted the salary ranges a few months ago. I'll see if I can find them and repost it here.

Historical average for JG11 to JG12 I've seen is around 5 years, some faster, some slower.

Promotions after JG12 that don't have a reliable timeline, it is performance and opportunity dependent. JG12 last I looked was the median retirement JG for 3M's salaried employees. The hardest promotions have tended to be to JG14, JG16, and JG18/L3.

For the US: The midpoint total cash salary (base + AIP) numbers are posted on this website, but probably a few years old by now. The midpoint for each job grade is about 12% higher than the job-grade below. From JG12 and up the AIP percentage of total cash will increase with every JG.

Ask your boss about the range. They call also share one range above

To move up a JG requires a promotion. You may can get one in your current role, but usually have to change jobs
