Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Work Rest

Whatever happened to the issue we were willing to have a work stoppage and the government intervening?

I remember it was a big deal at one point.

DIFFERENT INDUSTRY BUT I DO REMEMBER THIS. PATCO WAS A SUPPORTER AND DONATER TO REAGAN .What did President Reagan do to striking air traffic controllers who refused to go back to work in 1981?
On August 5, 1981, following the PATCO workers' refusal to return to work, the Reagan administration fired the 11,345 striking air traffic controllers who had ignored the order, and banned them from federal service for life.Sep 5, 2023

aphw+1u9Drh0w. If Congress said we have to work then yes you have to show up to work. If not the railroad could actually fire you for breach of contract.

But Congress can't force workers to show up can they? I mean they can say no right to strike but just refusing to work for the railroad would force their hand right?

8cyi+1u9Drh0w the Railway Labor Act. When both parties are at an impass which they were. To prevent an economical disaster the President has the choice to enact a part that allows Congress to either force the current PEB on us, Congress can also look at the unions and the carriers to force another completely different agreement on us, Congress can also order all employees back to work and force a 30 day cooling off period on us and both parties come back to negotiations.

Any of it. But mainly how do the "force" you back to work. What if you just didn't show up in masses?

3uag+1u9Drh0w. Are you that uneducated. We work under the Railway Labor Act. It was within Congress right to intervene. UPRR has honored the PEB.

2pyq+1u9Drh0w. As a railroad industry we work under the Railway Labor Act of 1926. It states that if both parties are at an impass then the President can ask Congress to intervene and either force an agreement that the PEB negotiated or Congress can enact there own agreement for us. It also allows Congress to order us back to work and/or stop a carrier lock out.

Just question.... how does the government force you back to work?

You answered your own question. THE GOVERNMENT INTERVENED! Did anyone really think they were going to let a very critical piece of the economy go down for a little while? A class 1 work stoppage will never be allowed to happen. If it were to happen it would be less than 4 hours in length, before a return to work was imposed and forcing everyone back to work

I’m assuming your referring to the fact that UP has yet to fully commit to the what they said they would do. And they being engineers get the 11-4 and the conductors are still pi----g in the wind in hopes of something happening. Dont hold your breath and we should all know by now the unions do what UP says. Doesn’t seem like they fight real hard for the fellow man or woman.
