Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

There's nothing 'bold' about this

A GM spokesman: “As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact.”

Can somebody please tell me what's so bold about getting rid of 1k people? It's the most cowardly thing I can think of. Instead of taking a risk and trying to find a different, long-term way to improve results, the leadership once again went for the easiest option available.

My heart goes out to the ~600 folks at the Warren Tech Ctr who are losing their jobs today. But don’t say you weren’t warned on this board for many months and were in denial. Also note, this is likely the 1st wave of engineering layoffs.

“These people are going to have a very difficult time finding anything close to what they had at GM.” That’s right… Ole Mary’s got you just where she wanted you. Now you’re getting that swift kick to the Cahones😢😣

Bold by cutting costs and then short cutting tech and decisions. Hope these aren’t the ones working on the autonomous driving cars…. 😢

A lot of people use situations like this to start their own business.

Maybe open your own Subway.

"Being laid off from GM in 2019 was one of the best things that ever happened to me."

The job market is VERY different in 2024 than it was in 2019.
These people are going to have a very difficult time finding anything close to what they had at GM.

Good luck, and a promising note: Being laid off from GM in 2019 was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

The best advice I can give is to apply/interview to as many places as possible just in case so you have a choice and possibly get paid severance and a sign-on bonus at the same time.

Regular employees pay the cost of the SLTs poor decisions.

I bet the billions they spent on stock buybacks to pump up the stock so they could cash out their options at a higher price would be nice to have right now.
