Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Idea on When Requirement to Houston will Occur

If I have a solid year, I’ll hold off on job hunting, but definitely will have my eyes open.

There are dozens if not hundreds of Californians over the years who have kept their CA home and/or family there while working in Houston. I'm not sure what the record is but many people load up on cheap tickets and fly back and forth frequently. Just four hours. It is doable.

There really is no corp opex savings to moving people who are working productively in CA to TX so it will not be rushed. The only factor is the office space lease which has several years as others have noted. With HESS and other stuff it is not clear how much space will be available in Houston or when.

Most likely in 2026 or so they will do what they did years ago with a bunch of IT jobs - they gave everyone 24 months to move to Houston. Some were eager and moved right away, others dragged their feet 23.5 months and a few found other lucrative IT jobs in the Bay area. The long notice is nice and gives people plenty of time to figure out what is best for their family. I would say by 2030 nobody will be in San Ramon at the office but a few people will be allowed to work from home if they are near retirement age.

People, the writing is on the wall, Chevron is going out of business. In reality, Exxon will get the best part of Hess and Chevron will be left with NOTHING! Only smaller oil companies will be left to gobble up but it wont be enough to keep track with Exxon. Exxon will come calling at some point. Exxon will then sell all properties downtown and move, what's left, to Spring. For all Chevron SR people, go ask your buddy "Handsome Newsome" for a job ... he's got lots of other peoples money to spend, and besides, you voted for him ... don't bring your politics to Houston.

Why would Chevron pay Bay Area salaries for admins to work in Houston???

They have ALREADY told us its not until 2026. And extends into 2028 at least.

Likely they are giving us time because...

Layoffs will happen. This will encourage those 55-60 to EOI. For those who arent in that group they will have a few years to figure it out.

This is the reality. I do have empathy for my SR colleagues but you gotta proactively figure it out. You can delay to 2028 maybe but the train to Houston is leaving.

It's no secret that CVX G&A spend is running hot (add the murmurs of restructurings in several BUs). The (eventual) Hess deal will only further stress the need to cut staff.

The CVX relo from SR to Houston seems a bit too conveniently timed. My guess is that they take a bit of a harsh approach to the move, hoping that many/most employees refuse. Those hoping for 2026 or later move dates seem a bit naive.

@1umn+1u3RSfP6: You know, while you are enjoying being flippant with your casual remark telling us to stay in California because you don’t have to worry about your job, moving kids, leaving aging parents, and so on, perhaps you could think for a moment how YOU might feel in this situation. This is stress-inducing for most of us in San Ramon and a major life change. If you can’t fake empathy for your California colleagues, at least have the decency to stay out of this thread, since your sophomoric comment added zero value to this conversation.

Theoretically family situation plays into the timing. So talk to your supervisor about any upcoming milestones or family commitement.

Nothing has been decided yet but it will be several years for most people. A lot could change in the interim. Another merger, a sale, a collapse, etc.

Here is the short Answer
Who do you inside Chevron?

  • top g-n, they are likely to find a reason for you to stay or even a business case to work remotely
  • Mid G-n, they keep you until you retire by 2029
  • Small G-n, they delay your move to 2027 to give you a chance to make up your mind before getting shafted
  • No G-n, you will have to apply soon in the next PDC and you will get a job that you hate so you are forced to quit with no severance

NEPOTISM is CVX middle name

True & don’t disagree with you, but I suspect reorg related activities will get rid of some of us sooner because they’ll force us to have to apply for a job, and no jobs will be posted in SR, so at that point your choices are just move to Houston at least one year sooner than any headquarters related move would have required or resign.

Since there have already been 2 recent opportunities to move to Houston with only about 10% moving in prior years those remaining in San Ramon are most likely not moving to TX. They might get another 10% by 2028. The remaining (retirement eligible) will wait it out through 2029 to train replacements once the new Modernized Houston building is completed in 2029. Since San Ramon has loyal employees letting them stay through 2029 makes business sense . Replacement will be tough as many are seasoned, so they will keep most around until at least 2028 to get final number to post new positions and handover the work. While HQ is moving it is still a business which needs good people to function. Giving us the gift of time is a win win. Try to stay positive.

If you’re in OPG timing could accelerate since there are rumblings of a reorg in 2025, and I don’t think any OPG jobs would offer SR as a work location.

Most people will have several years before being ordered to Houston...

Most are expected between 2026-2029, with the end coinciding with the end of the initial lease on the new office space. There is still work to be done determining who is in scope or not in scope.
