Thread regarding IBM layoffs

I have very bad team bcs my manager is incompetent

The longer I’m here, the more convinced I am that mid mgmt is especially problematic. Sure, IBM is not in the best shape, and the company in general is meandering and constantly losing its footing. But so much fails on the level of mid mgmt and that translates into bad immediate mgmt. Competent manager can make a bad team good. Instead they ruin good teams, and make bad teams even worse. At my little corner things got so bad that I’m thinking about quitting.

If you are with the CIO, then you are truly to be pitied. ML is the worst type of illegitimate so-and-so and pretty much all his reports are spineless and gutless wonders who could not find better employment.

Your management su-ks. So what are you going to do about it?

There are no wrong answers to this question. I've written before that IBM is like a failing restaurant...we've all seen them (or maybe we haven't). When a restaurant (or any business really) is failing, the employees will typically try to make the best of what they realize is a bad situation. Some employees will soldier on, and try to do what they believe is right for the business and the customers...even when they know it's all going to he-l anyway. Other employees will loot the business, stealing everything that isn't nailed down. They'll do whatever they can get away with.

And...a lot of employees will keep their heads down and not make waves, just hoping to get through another day and maybe another paycheck. They've got a family to feed, and times are tough.

There are no wrong answers.

My managers are good people and I like them. But they are weak and have no say.

These days , my VP makes every key decision now - including who to RA. And he doesn't know sh-t. This reduces everything to accounting by an ignorant buffoon.

The situation at IBM is fu---d up beyond all belief.

IBM management structure works where once a mandate comes down the management pipe not one level of management asks why or any challenging questions. This creates an issue where the work horses are directed of the mandate, 1st or 2nd line mangers can not answer any questions that the worker bees ask. Resulting with a work force doing as directed but doesn’t have the foggiest why.

What department are you in? I’ve noticed the same thing in CIO.

Run away while you can. Forget your manager, take care of yourself not IBM, first!
