Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Advice for Splunkers joining Cisco?

Assuming we don't get laid off tomorrow, and do receive our offer letters with down-leveling: can you give us more advice than "run" or start looking for a new job? Which we will.

The $2000 sign on bonus is for the benefits they cut form us, part of our $500 a quarter wellness benefit and to appease us for losing all our PTO.

I wrote here

You start receiving RSUs beginning Grade 10. That significantly boosts your salary from very low to so-so.

That's how its in my team for years. I just learned here https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1u0cR5I8 that is not always the case.

One further advice: Don't believe this board.

Lays off are part of any company strategy… get rid of redudant jobs, product, unprofitable offerings, managers or director with no reports, deadwood, etc

I bet the stock price will increase after the announcement

Well, Cisco has been a good employer to me. I have no complaints about benefit, and salary. I enjoy Cisco and enjoy my co workers. What I find exhausting is that it seems that every possible tiny problem requires an escalation. And suddenly an issue that could have been resolved with a phone call becomes an email chain with 50 people and takes three times as long to resolve.

Cisco geek laid it out real well.

I have been with Cisco for 14 years and I don't have a bone to pick personally. I am not going anywhere until I am showed the door. I think the majority of people who post on this board are just spoiled whiners so don't let them scare you. Understand that's this is a for profit company always keep your head on a swivel and prioritize your work life balance.

  • Sell cisco stocks as they come (ESPPs, RSUs) and re-invest (I don't want to give advice in what).
  • Most cisco employees have good work-life balance. It's hard to tell how that will apply to splunk. That makes me stay here a little longer. Sounds appealing?
  • You start receiving RSUs beginning Grade 10. That significantly boosts your salary from very low to so-so. Do extra work till you reach Grade 10.
  • Splunk's office is located in SF? Will you get free meals and access to micro-kitches just like Meraki/SF? Make use of it. We in the Bay Area a jealous.
  • Just attend leadership talks after layoffs. They are generally uninteresting.
  • Don't buy "best place to work".
  • I don't think it's true that layoffs focus on old employees. Your age does not matter. Layoffs impact every BU: most BUs are impacted minimal (to get rid of slackers?) and a very few are hit quite hard. Which few BUs get hit quite hard varies from year to year. Eventually it will be splunk.
  • There were layoffs under Chambers, there are layoffs under Robins, there will be layoffs under his successor. It's deeply embedded in our culture. Don't wish for a successor. Nothing will change.
  • Some companies like Google are good in making employees believe that leadership cares for them. Cisco is not even trying. We are treated like a commodity. It is important to remind yourself every now and then that you are important and not cisco. Nobody ever said on their death-bed I wish I had spent more hours in office.

I'm sorry but there is no better advice than run. Wish it wasn't that way....

If I had to do it again, I would recommend only staying if there are interesting things your are engaged with. As soon as you get that first slap in the face of Cisco being a bad employer leave asap. That has usually just been a good signal for things slowly getting worse. It’s like the toad slowly getting boiled and not even realizing it until it’s too late.

It’s about quality of life. If you are happy with your job and who you work around stick with it. I’ve worked at Cisco a very long time and have enjoyed it. What tech company would you join and avoid the layoff possibility?
If they do lay you off just go get another job.

Jump off this sinking boat as soon as you can, Cisco is totally fail and hopeless, no one want and no one can save it.

$2000 sign-on bonus for lost benefits and PTO should have been the first clue.

Cisco is so large that your experience here will be dependent on the people you work with directly and the quality of your direct manager and leaders. We're almost 90k people. It's essentially a decent sized town. Like any town that size, you'll find good neighborhoods and bad ones. As long as you choose the mindset of change being an opportunity, you can find good 'neighborhoods' within Cisco to live. Just don't come in with a chip on your shoulder complaining about everything that is different from your old town or you'll find yourself ostracized by your new neighbors.
