Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Terrible supervisor

I had a supervisor that made my life he-l because I was a minority. The supervisor thought that minorities were inferior and would often vocalize it. Has anyone had a similar experience? Curious if this is common or an isolated experience.

@1bll You seem pretty toxic to me. Must be upper management.

Your company and your industry has a serious “good ol’ boy” problem. Fix it. It’s driving away talent and exposing you to potential EEO lawsuits.

Very interesting reading these types of posts on here. I don't have a full database of all of them but the best I can tell, it is impossible to get promoted at exxon if you are:

  1. A minority (b/c they only promote white dudes based on the "old boys club")
  2. A white dude (b/c they only promote based on your minority status)
  3. A female (see reasoning in #1)
  4. A heteros-xual (see reasoning in #2)
  5. An LGBTQ+ person (see reasoning in #1)

The obvious conclusion is that the only folks that get promoted are the folks that YOU don't like because they "got ahead" purely based on characteristics that YOU can NOT do anything about and therefore your lack of advancement is 100% out of your control. Lucy for you, exxon isn't the military so you can 100% leave anytime you want and find a place where YOU are in control of your destiny. I wish you the best of luck.

@naa Some version of this story has been posted here since sometime in 2021. Probably by the same person. The facts have changed many times, to the extent that the accusation has lost whatever credibility it once had.

Contrary to what some of the posters here keep saying, this is completely asymmetrical. In other words, whatever nasty episodes you might have with one of the few people who aren’t white and have been given a little more power than you, is a drop in bucket compared to the constant harassment that POCs and women, white ones included, are subjected to. He-l, even the white guys who don’t want to go along with this garbage are targets. That’s just how deep the racist/s-xist rot goes. Of course the place is full of homophobes too.

Anyway, glad I got out. Seems like I haven’t missed much.

@naa I had a female supervisor like that and she hated men. She was disgruntled about her career and not being given promotions so she took it out on all the men she managed.

I had a minority supervisor that is also a woman. It is very clear she resents white males. She made my life a living he-l until I left. Things are much better now. I asked around and all white folks male and female said she lied to HR. Forbid employees to talk to HR and had been to HR regarding numerous other offenses yet she is still there with quite a reputation I may add and a number of nicknames. I just hope the rest of my friends survive here reign of te---r. She should be slated for another move soon but she definitely needs to be somewhere that isn’t responsible for “managing” or interfacing with people. She is meek and mild around the big dogs but when she gets you in a room by herself she is extremely toxic, aggressive and narcissistic. So yeah I’ve experienced he-l on earth.

Do not worry about it. The ones that you need to put an eye on them are the ones who are to quiet and social with the people. If you do not believe me, ask the people from permian about the one on facilities before Covid.

I had one that turned on me to save his job. He failed in integrating the team together and played divide and rule… me being a minority was an additional reason not necessarily the main cause… all minorities in his group were let go one way or another.
Education is a big factor on refinery sites. Majority of minorities are better educated than their local white counterparts who join at 16… this breeds further resentment and otherness.
If a minority is subservient, they are welcomed to a level the majority think is acceptable for a minority… ranking is manipulated, feedback more harsh for a minority. Mistakes made by minorities amplified.
Some places it’s like being back in the 1950s…

I have noticed aggressive supervisors have gotten worst since 2020 not only for minorites but in general supervisors we-ponize the performance assessment to berate staff.

@OP Definitely not an isolated incident. It’s a problem everywhere in O&G, and I’ve noticed people getting bolder about expressing it and acting on it.

The worst places for full-frontal racism is out at the plants and field sites. White guys who didn’t go to college don’t seem to like ethnic people who did. I don’t get it, but then again, I’m not a racist. It’s a little better in places like EMHC, but there you have to deal with everyone’s stupid micro-aggressions. Probably some overlap between the second group and the people who come here to whine about DEI constantly.

I once met a BTL that spoke against a project his unit needed because it was being progressed by a POC. To make matters worse, he always gave bad feedback about this person even though the project moved past many gates. Same BTL now is repeating the whole process to another POC that is progressing a project for his unit. I wager he was also same when he was a supervisor.
