Thread regarding NetApp layoffs

What’s next? Doubled workload and a lot of chaos

I’m almost sorry for all of us who are still here (for now). We have to pick up work for all the people who are gone. Many peeps who were let go are not easily replaceable. They will take on new people who we will need to train endlessly and not be able to rely on for months to come, if ever. I’m so sorry for all those who were laid off. Hope, guys, you land on your feet soon. I’m also sorry for the rest of us.

I would not boast over being 65th percentile of anything.

Weird flex to tell employees that you are not paying competitively. Save that BS for the golf course with your C-suite buddies.

ESS has some nasty VPs at the top who don't care for employees. Absolute sweat shop.

Products and releases should fail moving forward, but we all know they won't. There's still too many good engineers are still left at the company to allow incompetent leadership to ruin it. Quiet quitting (AKA doing only the job responsibilities you were hired to do) is the only way to combat this, but too many do their job to the fullest of their ability. Those of you who remain from layoffs are simply saved for the sla-ghter.

I can't believe he actually said the quiet part out loud. At least now I know that since I'm only getting 65% pay, I should only do 65% work.

The day after the layoff there was an all hands meeting in ICT. One of the talking points was the need to build bench strength because if one person goes out unexpectedly, there aren't enough people to pick up the slack. Not one of our "leaders" pointed out the obvious BS. So, yeah, everyone double up on responsibilities to fill the gaps. It smells like strategic incompetence so upper management can point fingers at front line managers and ICs when things inevitably slip through the cracks.

While it will be the case that whoever is left have to shoulder more responsibility, my observation is this extra workload won’t be recognized or appreciated.
Rather skills such as kicking the can down the road, slicing or dicing the work in forms of jira epics/stories (it doesn’t matter whether you actually do it - in their language you are getting it done) , yes man, ability to follow whatever drizzling down from top (doesn’t matter how id--tic it is) etc are valued more.
So don’t worry about double work if you want to survive next round (yes it will be there) rather develop your yes man skill.

Silent promotions all around.

Record setting FY24/Q4. No raise. No promotion. Colleagues fired, workload increased. Expected to maintain same level of performance. Don’t feel job security. Can’t live checking over my shoulder for my job.

Nice going NetApp. Thanks to a few senior-level decision-makers, NetApp has been transitioned to a work environment filled with chaos, confusion, high churn, behind-your-back gossip, etc. but continuing with a low compensation philosophy (target pay is 65th percentile with miniscule or not RSU). It is funny that pay is at the 65th percentile of the industry but the product developed should be No. 1. So now it is worst of all - low compensation, low morale, uncertain career, and no WLB.
On the other hand, the new environment does allow you to learn or enhance your political game. Or practice how to be a yes man.
BTW VPS/Sr VPs or Sr Director or whoever are the decision makers - your day will also come maybe three to four years down the road when you will be shown the door similar to what you are doing it now to others. As you have done, some new hire will do that to you. It is cyclic nature of blame game in a sycophantic environment.
