LinkedIn/Staffing Agencies Rumor

I heard rumblings of some scandalous information last week that was so outrageous I thought there’s no way this is true.

Now I’m not so sure. I have a very good friend that works at EgonZhender and his network is buzzing with this rumor. He said it doesn’t affect his firm as they only work with C-Suite positions. He knows a lot of people working in the recruiter space and thinks there’s some merit to what’s quickly running through that world.

I was just going to shut up and not say anything, but so many of my friends are Director level and up and they can’t land a job that I want to see if anyone else has heard anything remotely like this.

So here goes: allegedly, LinkedIn is weeding out any submitted applications and resumes that dates people, mostly in their 50’s, and not letting them through. Anyone with over 20 years experience is getting filtered out.

I keep telling myself this is ridiculous - no way this is happening. But, something doesn’t sit right with me, and could it really be happening? We all know ageism is running rampant, but why would LinkedIn/Microsoft risk their reputation? There are so many people in this grouping that haven’t found work, could this be why?

I know this could be a po

There's always one who defends COBRA as if it is a good deal. They generally get reverse mortgages too.

Spoken like someone who has never actually looked into how much Obamacare costs! It’s more than COBRA which is $700 a month. That’s for 1 person.

For me Cobra was 40% more than ACA coverage. And Cobra is only good for 18 months. Private insurance was cheaper, slightly, but unavailable for those with preexisting conditions.

Here’s the thing. You’re arguing against the option of Obamacare. You want Cobra? Fine. You want ACA? Good. You want private insurance? Ok.

Since the ACA doesn’t cost you anything why be against it for those who like it?

What investment firms are overlooking is the fact that people in their 50's not only have a lot of rich friends who they can bring in as clients to the new firm, but also their own book of assets that they can transfer in as well. All employers need to do is look at where these folks currently live and they can easily guess how successful these older folks are. Also, older people have a valuable network that they've built over time and which consists of other successful and competent people. If Schwab chooses to rid themselves of or refuse to hire people in their 50's then it's Schwab that is losing out. Competitors are picking these people up and making a lot of $ from them.

Any one with a manager or supervisor title at Schwab will have a hard time getting a job. It's not about age - but the reputation of the terrible management at Schwab has tainted their chances of having a decent future anywhere. All the good employees laid off at Schwab are now working at other firms and word of mouth is to not hire any former manager or supervisor that recently worked for Schwab. They will carry their poison with them where ever they go. Their terrible treatment of their employees has finally caught up to them.

Ha Ha Ha my director who is 50+ and who hasn't done any real work was laid off last october. His Linkedin still shows as working for Schwab. The last I heard was he was having a hard time getting a job.

Highly unlikely. There’s no profit motivation and companies have been weeding out 50+ candidates for decades. It would also expose them to the mother of all discrimination suits.

However, for everyone, assume that there’s a filter that will be used against you. Age, education, title, gender, location… save like there’s lots of tomorrows not working, have a side gig established or ready, be zero debt and treat every single day as if some incompetent will can your grass.

It su-ks. But it’s also the way of corporate. It hard. But life doesn’t care if it’s hard.

And if you don’t believe that’s fine. But you’re ignoring our specific company and shitfu-kery at your peril.

One more thing for those near 50 or over. You should think long and hard about medical insurance. One guy wants to get rid of the Affordable Care act because the president who signed it made fun of him at a roast. The other wants to keep it and add to it as a successful program. A sane person wouldn’t want to be unemployed, broke and without coverage. Be sane.

I hope it’s not true but look at the ages of most of the people who were laid off. I hear Gen Z takes their parents to interviews, can’t show up to work, won’t work and have no social skills so companies are starting to prefer to hire older people.

Highly unlikely. Have you asked yourself this - what would be their financial gain if they really decided to do that, and would it be greater than the hundreds of millions dollars they would definitely lose in following lawsuits?
