I never worked for a boss who knew who in the group did what.
The quiet guys usually worked their butts off and kept their heads down, and the extroverts were pals with the boss but didn't do much and got credit for the group's efforts.
Guess who's going to get targeted in any layoffs, especially if the boss stack ranked the group.
"Does SLT really think that RTO will make a difference?"
The point of returning to the office is not about making a difference or being more productive. It's about demoralizing people; making them so uncomfortable that they leave on their own terms without severance.
It's strategic. From February of 2023 to the ramp-up of RTO at the beginning to 2024 to now, many have retired early or quit. These are people that Mary didn't have to give severance to. Now comes the tough part - the imminent 10% cut, followed by the additional 5% cut. Think about the size of your group and subtract 15%. Are there 15% you wouldn't miss? Do you have confidence that the right 15% will be cut? And in the end, do you think upper management cares if the wrong 15% are cut?
They have misspent $16 billion on stock buybacks so that they can get more for their stock compensation. Now they want to make up some of that missing cash from our rear-ends. It's disgusting and it will backfire. Those of us who survive will suffer for it with stress and a bigger workload. Those who don't face a job market with very few opportunities that are generally 100% onsite and pay much less than what GM pays. But for Mary, Mark and the board of directors, life is unchanged. They get paid. They go to expensive conferences and are treated like royalty. This is just how the world works. "Making a difference" is just a blue-collar work ethic that doesn't translate in today's business world. We learn things like that to keep us in line. We aren't in a big family. Mary/Mark don't give a hoot about you or what you think makes a difference.
Does SLT really think that RTO will make a difference? I see people come in, sit there, and go home. There's no change in productivity or lack of. A productive person will be productive any place, any time. A non-productive person will be non-productive any place, any time. It's as simple as that. The problem is not attendance, it's the people they've hired and promoted over many years that have created a culture where non-productive people can hide.
Attendance is a behavior, but it's a behavior which means very little for productivity.
"Attendance is a behavior." ~ MB. what this is saying is they can now we-ponize anything they don't like about your RTO response, whether is when you come/go, how long you're on site or even something as petty as your attitude about RTO.

I thought doing good useful work was an important behavior.
But in the land of Oz, up is down and left is right.
At least MB is getting hers.

Do you think she was serious?
I do.
Get ready.
It’s been ramped up in many others “organizations” GM isn’t special. Never was. Can anyone say PIPs?
We've been doing both of those things for years.
