why do store manager never have to close the store, work past 5, and get most weekends off? how is this allowed in, especially in retail?

Belk has a hire turnover of management. Very high.
I was a store manager until somewhat recently. My peers that didn’t put in extra time did not last very long. To be honest, I would work 1 Sunday a month and usually when markdowns were insane but pretty much every Saturday. As far as getting off at 4 or 5, yeah maybe but that’s only because conference calls would finally be over by then. When did my shift start? 5:08 in the morning. Why, because that’s when the first ship to home email would come out and that basically dictated how the whole morning was going to go. Next report at 5:50 for the day priors credit results. Bad day? Guess what… you just got a bonus conference call. Better get the laptop out and start running reports. As far as the managers that sit in the office all day (Mondays excluded because there are a ridiculous amount of calls. Hang up on one and immediately join another)… good luck to them. Leaders worth anything go support the team. Register, fitting rooms, ship to home, trucks and anything else that is needed.
My store manager and the assistant store managers work 7am-3pm.They never close or work sundays. They have 8 weeks of vacation cause they are salary. They supposedly use 30 hours of acquired pto hours, where sales associates have to use 40.In my store they never do go backs, they will help with fulfillment and that's all. They have HR,sells lead, and a couple part timers as key holders.
It depends on the store. Store managers have more power to make decisions than we think - especially if they are in good standing with corporate. That means they can do pretty much what they want.
A store manager that does not work nights, weekends, or help ring on the register, do go backs, clean fitting rooms, or help process the truck, is NOT a manager, it someone making over $100k a year who is driving Belk into the ground. In fact, if a manager expects you to do something they won't do it also makes them a pitiful hypocrite.

My store my store manager opens and closes. does fulfillment and runs the register and everything else that needs to be done. But I will say there are some store managers that that do leave very early, won’t work Sundays and don’t close the store at all.
"All of our store managers close the store several nights a week and work weekends. Including the store manager. Also will work the register and so go backs."
the store manager never closes the store always leaving by 5, does not lift a finger to do gobacks or clean fitting rooms, and they dont work every weekend. they will work a weekend only when it's required of them, which is not that often. Your comment is way, way off.

what planet is that on?
