Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Safety guide for NREs. A must to make it.

Ok so lets says you re 12 years in and 3 years away from retirement. Things will suddenly change for you. Your ranking will drop and you will get more work and responsibilities. They will question you more and watch you closely. They will offer a move to help your career. All of these are the traps because even though they cant get rid of you for at least three years they want you ready at 55 to go. Follow their request and comply. Suffer for a few more years and be happy you will enjoy the medical and pension. Watch you hours and give 8 hours a day don't leave early. Don t do any dr-gs or borrow steal anything g from work. Even if your supervisor oks you borrowing a tool or supplies don t do it. Watch you expense reports and purchases. These are the firing offenses and can can terminate you for these. Watch your computer and company phone use. Don't talk to anyone or trust anyone at this time because of offending anyone. Watch your emails for inappropriate language of any kind. Live in a bubble and retreat for this time. I have seen people fired in there fifties because of all of the above. Exxon employees, supervisors and HR are not your friend they document everything and when they have enough evidence to get rid of you they will.
Don't sign anything and tell them you need to see a lawyer before you sign anything. I knew someone who told them this and exxon backed down from forcing this person to sign. Exxon hates the pensioners and wishes they could fire us all at 50. Exxon hates the fact that they pay the older employees so much money as well. We are a burden to the company and their profits. I can feel the hate from the mangers for we the NREs. They must get a bonus if they make us leave. If you are terminated you can seek legal action
but don't sign anything as exxon's case may be weak. One dr-g test is not conclusive in some cases. Keep your cars and vehicles clean no tools, alcohol, dr-gs, ammunition, firearms and company property. Do not violate any safety rules or have an incident. Walk on eggshells and you all your vacation as more time spent away means less risk. Don't volunteer to transport documents, chemicals or instruments tools in your personal vehicle. Dr-gs can include OTC medications that are not in the original package. If they want to sc--w you they will. Firearms could include BB g-ns, long knives' and brass knuckles. This is the most dangerous time for an employee. Be careful and good luck. Once you are over the line to retirement you can relax because they can not take it away from you. At 55 we have the power and can retire at anytime.
I speak from experience because I am NRE and have seen the way they have treated past NREs. We will have the last laugh on exxon.

I’m NRE and I’m gritting my teeth to make it to 55. Five years ago I would have rolled my eyes at the OP’s post - not anymore. Really disheartening to see ageism and rule changes that tend to target experienced employees in the assessment system. I want to see the percent of NREs that are put into NI and NSI compared to other age groupings. Probably would be really interesting…

If I were retirement-eligible you bet I’d be out of here. For now I’m keeping my nose clean, my head down, my paperwork current, and counting the days.

Anyone know how I can get to CL 30 before I retire? I really want that pay bump before the pension baby!

@4rzk, retirees pay for their own insurance at about the same rates as an employee. Medical insurance is not a reason to stay.

I don't care how rich someone is they need the medical. It is the reason to stay. Once you have that you can leave if you want and count your millions. I know a few people that are stuck working because they don't have health care. They have to work till 65 to get the Medicare. Health care is expensive. That us why you have to be careful until you are retirement eligible. That is why I stay and take the unfair ranking system. After retirement go do what makes you happy.

“Safety Guide…”

LMAO is this BS meant to be serious?

Put this into perspective: what are you making? $180k/year on the low end? Probably pushing $300k on the high end. Guessing your 401k is maxed out and your McMansion is paid off. Maybe trading stock/crypto or hoarding bonds. In other words, you’re probably a small-m millionaire, or close to it. It’s no secret that you don’t do a whole lot to earn that money. Your job is mostly to generate documentation.

Explain to the world WTF it is you all need to be kept safe from.

Retired last year, MPT Upstream expat. What a great ride and a very comfortable retirement. Setting up and going after REs has existed since Noah was a toddler. My generation got the best out of Exxon. Now it's a Millennials Company. Good f n luck. Anyone good has already left.

@1xbm You’ve been adequately compensated for your time and labor over the course of your career. That’s all you’re entitled to.

It isn’t the problem of your employer or society if you can’t or won’t move on for personal or financial reasons. Consider developing interests outside of your work.

We are not asking for a hand out. We just want fairness and justice. My pay is high enough to retire. I just want to be left alone and the ability to do a good job for the company. Most employees want to be an asset to exxon but are pushed down and out. Only the chosen are able to shine at exxon. That is the ultimate problem with exxon. I am thankful for the pay, and retirement but we all want to be utilized to our full potential.

@1ysw I’m sorry, but if you’re still coming to work because you’re unable or unwilling to retire, that really is your problem.

It’s not the responsibility of any employer to act as a guarantor of your post-employment financial stability. You’ve been paid well enough throughout your career to have set yourself up for retirement, assuming that you planned well and didn’t pi$$ your earnings away on stuff like new boats, pickup trucks, and multiple divorces.

I got hired in 1980 and retired in 2016. It was a great career with a very fine salary. When I told EM was retiring they ask me to stay another year but the wife said enough.

I got lucky in my career choice and company.

Retirement is why we work here. It is not because of the love we get or respect. Exxon su-ks for most workers. I am here for the pay, retirement and medical after retirement. The people are the worst I have ever worked with. With out the pension and medical no one would stay more than a few years here. I have always worked hard and tried to give my best. The problem is when they ding you for stupid reasons. Reasons like communication when you have no one to communicate with, delegation with no one to delegate to, and time management when you are overloaded. I am not used to my full potential as I could do design or engineering work at exxon. Several other persons were promoted to engineer positions that had no idea what they were doing. These favorites were protected and could do no wrong. So yes we older NREs deserve the pension and medical as we have paid our dues. If the company does not realize the value in us then we can retire and work for the service companies. I know several former employees that were denied MPT positions that retired and work for service companies as engineers or project managers. Remember one companies trash is another's treasure. We have the choice and power remember that.

@OP The truth is, nobody is getting better at anything after age 50. Unless you paint or write poems or something.

It’s not just Exxon. There are millions of people in the workforce who should move on, need to move on, can move on, but who just won’t. This is the case for most REs/NREs

If I were in charge, I’d just offer all of you the full retirement if you worked more than 10 years and call it a day, with the stipulation that the company can consult you free of charge for as long as you collect the pension.

Excellent advice! I went through the same thing and many times closed my door during lunch so I wouldn’t have to see my boss if I didn’t have to. I never attended anything she scheduled that I didn’t have to either. It’s very degrading but definitely a reality
