Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Advice for proper way to leave and make sure I take care of my health care needs as well

On the last day of employment you have insurance benefits for the remainder of that month.

I want to give a two weeks notice but if they do not honor my notice then I will miss out on health insurance for the next month.

I want to give notice but I don’t trust Schwab to do right by me and prevent me from access to healthcare before I start my new job if they terminate my employment on the spot. I am going to another brokerage firm. I am in a client facing role.

I also do not want to work two more weeks than necessary and push back my new job start date (they don’t offer insurance for 30 days) just because Im making sure I have access to my health care.

This prompts me to have to just tell them on the day that my last day is today. I know they don’t technically require a notice but it’s ‘appreciated’ and I’m thinking reported on the U5 in some kind of capacity that can be viewed in a negative light?

Please help. I need to priority myself over the politics of Schwab but I want to make a good decision. I wish I could just ask HR but I don’t trust them.

I'm assuming you begin your new job on the 1st of the month. If it were me, I'd see if I could renegotiate my start date and push it out by a week. Then give Schwab a one week notice on the 1st. Basically split the difference.

But they will still pay you through the 2 weeks. That is assuming you tell them you are going to another firm, which you don't have to say anything about where you are going. Your Cobra will start the first of the following month that you left, but you do not have to sign up for it until 60 days after your last day of employment, but you still have the coverage for those 60 days even you may not sign up for Cobra coverage until that 60th day. My point is if you have no heath event between the last day of the month you left and the start of your new health insurance, if not more than 30 or 60 days, you show continuous coverage, and are just riding the wave. If you have health care appts you HAVE to attend between jobs or a medical issue than at that point you take the Cobra and sign up and pay for only that time you needed it. Otherwise, you just ride the wave until your new health insurance kicks in, and don't pay for the Cobra if you don't end up using it, while still not showing a gap in insurance.

If you are going to another firm in the same field they will walk you out that day
