Thread regarding Hertz layoffs

Hertz should change its EV recharging policy

Hertz's EV recharging policy is a disaster that confuses both customers and employees.

Why not just charge people $1 for each 1% decrease in battery level upon return and offer a $1 discount for each 1% increase in battery level? That way, someone returning a car at 90% that was checked out with a 96% battery level would get charged $6 and someone returning a car at 90% with an initial battery level of 30% would get a $60 discount on his rental bill.

If a customer checks out an EV at 96% and gets charged $35 for returning it at 95%, he is not going to be happy about that.

Hertz makes headlines with over changing customers renting EV’s.

It looks like part of ithinkthereforeisuck's comment was missing because of angle brackets ("less than" and "greater than" signs) in the text. I think this website stripped out the part that looked like it could be an HTML tag.

Trying again (substituting "less than" and "greater than" for the angle brackets):

ithinkthereforeisuck (funny username):
Hertz ran out of cars, gave me a Tesla with less than 70% charge and told me there was a fat fee (I forget the $ but it was bad) if I brought it back BELOW 90 PERCENT.

Yes 90%

THERE WAS 1 CHARGER WITHIN RANGE of ~10% and it had maybe 4 stalls. Forget where I was but hertz was a complete joke.

I had the same car through budget or Avis multiple times but they were way way cooler and had a return at 60% and chargers on site so the car was greater than 80% on pickup. Super easy, no stress. Almost like you need charging infrastructure in the city to rent EVs… weird.

Hertz is like a caveman that got mad when the fire went out instead of just adding some wood

(Yes I know I’m complaining about part of the issue, end of the day hertz never should have bought and rented EVs in cities with sh-t infrastructure because no one want to deal with that)

If the policy is that the "customer must bring it back within 5% of what it went out on," why doesn't Hertz put that on its website?

Some redditors report something different:

Foxhound199:
I charged it at the closest supercharger to 100%, drove less than 10 miles to drop it off and they still charged me a recharge fee. Hertz seems shady as he-l. I paid upfront, direct, showed taxes and fees included, but somehow there was 15% in additional taxes at the rental counter. What a bunch of scammers.

CarltonCracker:
I had to charge my last hertz EV (non Tesla) to 100% when I returned it. Those batteries are gonna be wrecked if they keep treating them like gas tanks.

I can't verify the stories of these particular redditors, but Hertz's EV recharging fees seem to be the source of a lot of complaints.

Hertz's EV recharging policy should be clearly communicated on its website. If the "customer must bring it back within 5% of what it went out on," the website should say that.

The customer must bring it back within 5% of what it went out on. They wouldn’t be charged anything if they left with 96% and brought it back with 95%.

Reddit discussion:

TectixYT:
It's an awful policy and the reason EVs never took off with Hertz. I've rented an EV once with them and I was lucky the guy was super nice to put the charge level at 30% when it was actually at 70%.

overchargedinvegas:
It seems like the EV rental experience with Hertz depends on much the branch manager is willing to bend the rules. That leaves the customer guessing about what is going to happen when he rents an EV.

On Hertz's website, it says, "Skip the Recharge Return your EV at any charge level and we’ll recharge it for $35—or just $25 for Gold Plus Rewards Members*. Or, return it at the same..."

https://www.hertz.com/us/en/vehicles/electric-vehicles/faq

I think "Skip the Recharge" is supposed to be a link to a page with more details, but right now clicking on it doesn't do anything.

It would be better to have a standard policy clearly communicated on Hertz's website that every Hertz manager follows consistently instead of the current situation where managers feel they have to bend the rules to make them more reasonable.
