Thread regarding Spirit AeroSystems layoffs

June 2024 Layoffs - Wichita (up to 450 cut)

They're planning to lay off hundreds of workers in Wichita because they've got too many planes already made and not enough new orders coming in... Around 400 to 450 hourly workers will be affected... This news came out through an email, but the official announcement is expected soon... Its tough to hear this, may will be hit hard, Spirit is one of the biggest employers in Wichita so it's not good for the community... the mayor is all political and she's now saddened by this but really no help... The union is also stepping in to support those who are affected, but they did not do much either...

It's a rough situation for everyone involved...

This really should not be a surprise.

Spirit has been building in excess of what Boeing is delivering. What they build is not up to standard. Boeing has been cash flowing them until such time as they buy them.

Once Boeing take control you can expect:

  • significant organizational changes to remove overlap and instill new leadership to reform the culture
  • rate reductions to align with Boeing inventory needs
  • divestment of non-core business lines like Airbus
  • layoffs as a result of this

It’s unfortunate but it’s coming.
