Thread regarding Lumen Technologies layoffs

No more money for copper

They finally told our area in the PNW in a meeting today with Maxine that no more money will be spent on copper. No tools, no cable, no peds, nothing. Mean while we have over 1700 tickets and FCC complaints piling up.

Was only a matter of time I suppose

"Don't worry folks, NaaS is the savior of Lumen. Haven't you heard? The late to the game, disruptive, on demand fiber option. There’s a huge push internally to sell it. I guess the strategy is to sell NaaS and hope the customer bumps up the bandwidth and forgets to throttle it down, which will result in a higher bill. He-l of a strategy. News flash, almost no one is buying it, and if they were, there aren’t even enough NaaS enabled sites to even make a difference."

And your suggestion is to keep copper going, because people are buying that?

Customers will be tricked because Lumen is making self service checkboxes checked by default and it needs to be turned off or else customer gets billed for it. A big scam.<<

Wow. That's a form of slamming.

Is this a surprise to anyone? The company has been saying for past few years that the legacy product and services has to go and the market analysts have recognized that and the stock price reflects such. Lumen will sell off all copper to someone else who has a profitable business model that has copper in it. By March 2025 the only thing left in Lumen will be Quantum Fiber and Exaswitch. The rest will be cancelled or sold off. There is more RIF in near future so plan wisely.

You don't need pots anymore for alarms and emergency services. Havent for over at least a decade. Plenty of boxes that do the conversion for old alarms, using cell or voip. For emergency services specifically, you probably haven't heard of next-gen 911.

Maxine should have been let go years ago.

“Uh, no. As long as fire alarms and emergency services REQUIRE a pots line, we cannot drop support on a dime. That is illegal.“

Don’t know why you’re quoting me, the Original poster is the one saying funding & support for copper was cut off, I just posted a plausible and likely reason..

Locals only 20% of revenue. Expect to be working in the same areas just except the truck will say Ziply and for less pay.

"A fair bit of the employees here really don’t support the notion of a migration of customers to fiber, they have cultivated jobs of comfort and ease over in the legacy copper world, fiber is a threat to that security so they work against the evolution of the technology.

it’s the same thing as 20 years ago, folks refused to go to the DSL classes, refused to learn about computers, refused to use company email, all they wanted to do was shoot basic pots trouble, or splice cut cables..

…. Might be why the company is having to drop down the hammer so hard on the legacy copper. The time has come to Evolve, migrate or die"

Fixing copper on a daily basis in Phoenix metro. Bad sections. Aerial and buried being replaced. Aerial and buried rehab going on as well. Pedestal being replaced. Not sure what’s different in other states.

Why invest in a business you’re going to divest/sell? Announcement will be made in the summer.
