Thread regarding Saudi Aramco layoffs

Artificial Intelligence is the future of Aramco

Those new Large Language Models (LLM) are truly a wonder to behold and perfect for Aramco imo. First, they can summarize large, complex documents into an easy-to-understand paragraph that incorporates diagrams from candy crash and skibidi toilet. Even better, they can do so with absolutely no understanding of what has been actually described. They just look for patterns in their training data and regurgitate. They will also cheerfully answer even the most absurd questions with generic platitudes that sound great in presentations to those that don't know any better (senior management). Finally, if they don't actually know an answer, they will simply make one up. This is called hallucinating, and it is a time honored tradition in Riyadh.

So fear not, Aramco is hard at work on developing its own AI capabilities to replace those pesky Expats. The company started out by fine tuning open source models from hugging face, but soon enough Aramco will have its very own AI flunky. I hear they are training it right now on tribal politics, no bid contracts and wasta. Oh, and of course they are going to include Aramco's internal data to get that garbage-in-garbage-out self delusion that the company prides itself on.

As a former Expat who got disgusted with Aramco's blatant disregard for the truth, I wish them the best of luck, as no Human Being should be subjected to this nonsense. In fact, I even have a new mantra for their LLM. ARAMCO METABRAIN - "may the farce be with you!"

AI will never work until it has learned to do PowerPoint and give itself multiple dry runs

Still referring to it as a LFZ. That was in play at least 20 years ago!
Some things just plain fit.

Everything fails in the LFZ (Logic Free Zone)!

While Artificial Intelligence needs to kept on a tight shirt leash, a greater task will be to find and replace intelligence that is clearly artificial!

Anyone who has content in the Sharek now unknowingly has that as part of MBs learning models, if you had anything sensitive in there then tough luck. Network drives have also been used as well as all sorts of external proprietary stuff, of which some bits are dubiously obtained. Some might say those kind of behaviours should be considered unethical and/or illegal, not here!

While I don't think AI is a threat to employees doing real work, it is a very real threat to 90% of the people who work for Aramco corporate. The fact that AI often produces non-sense answers to complex problems is not an issue for Aramco management. Most Aramco answers are already non-sense because management dictates the answer it wants before the analysis is done. What matters is not the non-sense answer, but that the answer was supported by power point presentations, white papers, spreadsheets, etc. AI can do all this and, best of all, no one who deals with Aramco will notice any difference! All Aramco needs to do is keep a few high level Expats around to take the blame when things go wrong.

Would love to hear from any of the poor chaps who worked on the metabrain.

The Aramco metabrain is total gobshiite. Trained on digital effluent it will fail, but management will continue to hail it as some work of art. A sea of digital jobbies floating to the top of the aramco cess pit, it stinks almost as bad as the Dhahran pong.

Clown shows like EY and BCG will continue to pump out recycled AI generated ppts, complete with the knowledge that Aramco management need scapegoats and confidants, with all the plausible deniability that affords.

AI is a perfect fit. All the high dollar expats can be sent back to their home countries. only a few Saudis from the same tribe can run the entire operation from their Iphones between surfing facebook and playing candy crush. All the other saudis can go back to a simple way of life. More time to go to the Mosque, Bahrain for beers and thai ho----s, drinking tea and eating with their hands. Perhaps they can even regress further and go back to a nomatic life or
tending goats and riding camels. All the best, I hope it works out for the choose ones. BTW, great inital post.

Great news!

This will finally replace the magic 8-ball my department has been using to make decisions.

Funny. The best humor always has a kernel of the truth embedded within.
