Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

The EM culture of fear

I’m so sick of the culture of fear that is so apparent at XOM; fear of our performance assessment process, fear of PIPs, fear of no control over career and fear that people will get hurt with the low cost / low quality / low safety culture that’s happening with all execs nodding in agreement in readiness for the RSUs.

Fear? What is there to be scared of? The first time you get loud with your boss they coward down and just drop your ranking to flex. It’s the only play card they have because they have no backbone.

Fear is nothing but self loathing & self insecurity. If you love your job, do good work & make an effort to earn your salary, everything else will fall into place. Quit crying & get back to work!

There is a lot of good points made here. How are slaves kept in line when there is no leadership? When workers no longer respect leadership because it’s toxic and lacking? Makes me wonder if “leadership” hasn’t gone to Durwood looking for answers and this is the best he could offer. Much like England, Roman Empire and all the other unsuccessful tyrants. Manage by fear and terrorizing the subordinates. How horrible is it to live in constant fear of pip doing all you can to be your best knowing that at any moment, luck of the draw, roll of the dice or a new merciless manager your lively hood is gone? I’m sure this style of management is responsible for the lack of teamwork and counterproductive to team building. No this company was not always this way. I don’t care what manager hood on here telling folks to buckle up.

I feel for the poor souks having to endure this harsh environment just long enough to retire. In the end, all that will be left is toxic managers that are treating each other harsh because that’s all that they know works.

Good luck to all. I hope this place works out for you and that you don’t suffer any health problems from having to deal with this place.

We only hire alpha personality, leaders. When people do their job well only, we put them on PIP because we only focus our annual performance assessment on what is not on their job description. BS like influence without authority, or 7 other behaviors that is not relevant to your current role.

I challenged a manager's suggestion after his group was faulted for not following procedure. In a group meeting, his suggested response (that was to go upline mgt) was that "we will follow the rules." I pointed out that his suggestion was a generic statement, and we should have already been doing that anyway. As an alternative, I suggested we drill down to determine the cause of the breakdown and then address that specifically in our response. No one else in the meeting spoke a word. The manager transferred me out of his group the same day.

Seek psychological safety from your peers when you cannot have it from your supervisor. That is more within your control.

The significance of bad supervisor behavior on morale and the perception of the company cannot be understated.

I’m not afraid. There’s no bending over or getting down on my knees. They can go scr*w themselves and fight over crumbs. When you all you got going for you is your perceived position of power, that just sad and pathetic.

That is why no matter what happens, good or bad, always make your supervisor/manager love you. Bend if you must.

I can attest to the culture of fear. My manager threatened my career when I challenged some very bad ideas that has no business value. He said I am not allowed to work in an area I dedicated a majority of my career. Even told me nobody cares about the priority work just to gaslight me. All this because it’s going to drop his ranking when others find out that he is a fraud.

The best thing I did was to leave. Less anxiety, more control over my career, and no more dealing with dirtbags like him. Priceless.

This is how traditionally Exxon management have managed. Now it gets worse with added pressure of 8% pips.

How can the organisation talk about care and then rule by fear.

Leave, the constant state of anxiety is not worth it. There are so many great organisations out there.

This company's management only knows how to manage by fear. They have nil ability and creativity to grow a constructive, supportive, team based environment for young and old folks alike.

The evolution of the company over the most recent 4 years is not what great looks like.

Due to our global footprint, Exxon has always had a "military hierarchy" style of management which means that you follow orders or you are court martialed.

Any new hire should understand what it means to serve in the ExxonMobil military.

This level of fear and toxicity has been greatly enhanced by the level and manner in which forced layoffs have been implemented over the last 3-4 years; targeting experienced/higher cost employees, eliminating the policy of only dropping one level in ranking per review, reducing benefits …. There has definitely been a shift.
