Dealing with bad managers here

2 questions how does one deal with bad manager along with that, how does one move into another engineering group. Currently not happy with the group I'm in.

Would agree that bad managers are all over the company watch the Indians they are the worst! Do good work and keep your head down; make sure people like you. Think your bosses boss…

Manager retaliation is more prevalent than you’d think. They think they can get away with it and usually they do given the system. They never get reviewed by their direct reports. Annual 360 should be mandatory and taken into consideration in their performance evaluations. Would be great if Vicki would take the sickle and cull these incompetents out.

Grin and bear it. You can tell your boss that you'd like another job but they can take it as an insult. Even if you get the other manager in the group you want to be it to start asking if you're available can lead to a disaster. They might tell him that you are needed. Your manager can than turn on you by having a mid-year review lowering your rating. You won't be going anywhere after that. They could then give you a PIP which is how they'll kick you out the door. I'd look for another job now.

It’s shocking to see how many bad managers Oxy has. You’d think they’d either be good at their craft or good at managing. But typically they’re neither. Just good a su-king up. Be careful where you leap. May be just one puddle to the next

Make sure you pick up the culture, bully, persecute, spread hate. Its worked great at oxy for years and just ignore the high turnover of employees. Remember, Oxy has a reputation for a reason. Its not just all the serious law violations, accidents, terrible business decisions and fatalities, its bigger than that. Work hard at fitting in on all these and you'll be a higher up in no time. Get someone else to talk to the families of those people who lost their lives. Its not important.

Check for vacancies posted and apply internally to the one that interests you the most. Do what you can to manage your career and seek out opportunities. Good luck!

To me, it's only one question... How do you get out. Best strategy is to have another group pull you in rather than you request a transfer out. Hopefully you've been networking and know a suitable team to move on to. Dealing with a bad manager is usually problematic for the employee. Little is done and it forces people to take drastic action (leave the company).
It's vitally important to do good work, network. and be visible.
