Marathon Employee Here

Is this company really as bad as what’s posted here? What are plusses and minuses?

Peter Principle Defined Here (message to Marathon employees): look up the word “psychopath” in the dictionary and you will see a picture of our SVP Strategy. The fact he has made it to the ELT says all you need to know about us. And don’t believe me… ask just about anyone in the company. His people skills are massively negative.

The best brown nosers get on the Hi-Pot list which means they can do no wrong and skyrocket to the top regardless of people skills or competency. Never-the-less, most leave because they are not VP’s in their first ten years. Most of the ones who make it to the top are soulless narcissists who only care about their pay and personal asset increasing.

The company is in desperate need of honest economists and a post-audit process to learn from mistakes. But then, duh, people would be held accountable for their bad decisions.

Does ConocoPhillips give you a million dollar sign on bonus? What about providing a home in River Oaks and use of the company jet? If not then I just cannot accept the offer.

Pros

  • salaries, bonuses, 401K
  • WfH, 9/80’s, PTO
  • most people are nice
  • great safety culture
  • impossible to get fired
  • great place for US employees
  • we haven’t fully sold our souls to renewables.

Cons:

  • Sometimes too “corporate”
  • Houston makes manuals and standards that are hard to follow in the field.
  • integration is still ongoing
  • impossible to fire someone

If you’re a marathon employee, the odds are 90/10 you won’t have to worry about what kind of company we are.

These jokers have a few things wrong. We at least get paid well. Collect your great benefits and exercise your "work/life balance". At some point you can quietly quit like most people. Just get enough done to stay solidly in the middle or just above average. Show up before 9am and leave around 4pm with the rest of the traffic jam into the parking garage. Work your 9/60!! Ride this oil company into the sunset.

Very, very poor management. For the most part, it really is as bad as you see here.

Every day spent at COP is a waste and a drain on your life force. Glimmers of hope will tempt you into investing time, energy and keep you around. Time after time you will be disappointed and disillusioned. COP lost its soul, culture and loyalty years ago. Have a Plan B and C for yourself and implement quickly.

You can tell how “with it” the satisfied employees are from these posts. One genius thinks we’re a downstream company and no longer have an upstream component.
Probably a manager.
So. Yeah.

Lots of egos and not a lot of experience with success. That’s all you really need to know.
Oh. And contractors get the final say while qualified employees are ignored and driven out.

Yes, it is just as bad or worse as you have heard. COP has been a technical loser for decades and is the worst in terms of morale and any sort of leadership. Try to find a better place, don't believe the HR folks who get on here trying to change the topic. The majority of the posts tell the real story and its a grim one.

Satisfaction is highly variable and really depends on what team. Also it will depend on your perspective coming from another company. @1jwi+1sP5wice sounds like a supervisor in a duplicative role with zero actionable responsibilities.
6:00-3:30 should be good. I think 3:30 is considered the earliest acceptable time to leave but there's plenty of people leaving between 3:30 and 4:00 who get to work at 9:00 and take routine 2 hour lunches.

If you don’t like it you could try another smaller size company. Try pioneer. Scrap that one. Is Hess still around. No, that’s no good either. Probably same thing with Crownrock. What about Devon or Oxy?

Plus:
Good salary, good benefits, plenty of opportunities to advance your career
Minus:
Hi-pots given preferential treatment despite no real evidence they deserve it, incompetent managers, decisions made arbitrarily, DEI out the wazoo

Unfortunately, I believe this forum has been hijacked by 1 or 2 laid-off folks, and some bottom feeders. Don’t come here for actionable information.

How flexible are the work hours? Is 6-3:30 an option for the long commuters?

Legit best company I've worked for. There are bad apples but most of us can get things done and have support from managers as long as we are doing the right thing.

Conocophillips is a well run company. If they still had the upstream it would definitely be considered one of the best major oil companies. But being a well run company doesn’t mean avoiding job cuts were necessary. There are worse run independent oil companies out there that are the size of ConocoPhillips.
