Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

HR protocol

Has anyone ever had a manager tell you not to talk to HR? Reason being is they would handle all communication between HR and yourself? I mean to me that sounds wrong

Yes. About a year into my career with EM, I realized I had no idea who our group's HR contact was. Purely out of curiosity I asked my manager how to contact HR, and was surprised at how defensive he got. I distinctly remember him saying "anything you want to tell HR, you tell me first."

The lack of trust and transparency shown to individual contributions was one of many reasons I left the company.

Plain and simple: EM is ba----g HR & HR is ba----g EM.

It's a very symbiotic relationship and not necessarily unique to just EM. Understood?

I’ve had a few run-ins with HR at EM over the years. Each was most certainly forced by others, and always coming with the words that they just want to understand what happened better to help protect employees. Well I’m here to tell you that EM HR and the lawyers that support them (which you will never see of hear from but they are definitely there) are only looking after EM interests and potential lawsuits against EM. They will and do discredit and smear and coerce EM employees, and contractors all for the goal of keeping people quiet and compliant. Some of the legal forms I’ve been “required” to sign by HR over the years under threat of being fired would blow your mind. My advice is if anyone ever mention HR to you, lawyer up and protect your rights, and your dignity. They definitely wont like it, and it still may not end well and EM has a lot of HR and lawyers and they hate (there is probably a trooper word I could use here) when they are not in control of manipulating the situation for EM corporate advantage. Never make the mistake of thinking or letting other employees, supervisors, or managers around you think that HR is on your side of anything, or in anyway interested in protecting you. That is a deep pile of hubris.

Unless you have a S-xual Harassment case, I advise never going to HR with a complaint.

I had a "colleague" who was being consistently inappropriate and abusive to me, my manager told me not to go to HR, as it would only hurt me & my career. Years later another manager came in and finally got rid of him.

There is always the hotline, not HR but with all the unethical stuff that happens it should be used…. Of course it’s anonymous

HR is not there for you, but to protect the company. I’d filed a complaint years ago against a manager that created a toxic work environment. Despite multiple interviews with peers who witnessed his behavior and corroborated the evidence provided, he got off with no issue. In fact, he was promptly put in an expat role and a few years later, was promoted to an executive level within 3 years.

That’s what EM does: they move the biggest a--hats around, but never kick them off the island.

HR is and never has been on your side.
It follows scripts written by outside consultants to ensure your issues with individuals or company practices are swept away and, as noted, reported to your 'superiors'.
You are a bad resource. The human part is irrelevant.

I went to HR with a complaint. HR contacted my Country Manager who spoke to my Department Manager who spoke to my Supervisor who told me that I must withdraw my complaint and do damage control to salvage my career.

My manger and I disagreed because she was going behind my back and biasing department heads to not support the assignment she gave me. When I told her I didn’t think that was ethical and I’d like to talk to HR she told me that. I retired shortly after that. Worst boss I’ve had in or outside of Exxonmobil.
