Thread regarding Nielsen layoffs

Let's fight for our jobs!

Forming a Union
Workers seeking to form a union at their workplace should talk to their co-workers to build support about issues they are facing. Often workers do this through forming an organizing committee. Workers can contact an established union for support and guidance or they may seek to organize their own independent union.

A group of workers seeking to organize a union should gather union authorization cards/petitions from their co-workers to show support for forming a union. Union authorization cards are documents that workers sign expressing their support for union representation.

Once organizers collect signed cards or petitions from their co-workers, there are generally two paths to follow to form a union:

Majority signup / Voluntary recognition

1:A majority of employees in the bargaining unit sign cards/petitions seeking union representation
2: Workers ask their employer to recognize the union voluntarily
3: If the employer agrees, the union becomes the workers’ legal representative for purposes of collective bargaining and the parties begin bargaining
4
If the employer refuses to recognize the union, workers can file a petition for an election with the NLRB
NLRB Election

1: Have at least 30% of coworkers sign union authorization cards/petitions
2: File a petition for a union election with the NLRB
3: If the union wins 50% +1 of the vote, your employer must bargain in good faith over working conditions

Forming unions only works when everyone bands together. Unfortunately, folks at Nielsen have no b*lls and willingly allow their owners to walk all over them without putting up ANY kind of resistance.

Part of it comes down to people here having low self esteem issues and lack of education. When you know your worth and can think intelligently and critically, you tend to also know what your options are, and can push back effectively against things like this.

Starts a long time ago though, and not when the company is 80% through with their offshoring plans.

Those at Nielsen follow this trend (and the company knows this) so they accept whatever is dished out to them by the company and owners, with the unemployment line, reduced severances and no job prospects as a parting gift.

People say stuff like “why would I want a union for this company? “ no man not for this company, because every company allowed to do this to employees will inspire another and another. Because if we are already losing our jobs we might as well prevent others from losing them too. Because causing I massive inconvenience for the corporate elite sounds like a better time than job hunting in this economy.

Unions can’t stop layoffs. They’ll just be done based on seniority at that point, which is worse in my opinion.

To unionize for remaining (temporarily) on with a company that everyone hates won’t work. People are counting down their last days of working here, not looking to extend their jail sentences.
