If ExxonMobil hires the “best of the best”, why are we hiring all their talent?

The only XOM people I have met are secondees in the JVs.
What BU and Function is hiring Exxon people? I have seen no Exxon people hired in the BU I work in and for that matter no hiring in the function at all from external. Along with not trying to retain people who leave for other reasons.
There is a lot of turnover at Exxon and there always has been. They set up a very competitive environment, where you have to aggressively play the system and butt kiss those above. In this environment it does not take much for good folks to hit a professional, organizational, or personal roadblock (however short term), which leads them look for less turbulent waters. Unfortunately Chevron does hire lots of these folk, who bring in the type A, backstabbing practices learned at Exxon. Aggressive behavior does not lead to better performance outcomes, but Chevron Sr. Management loves the imported butt kissers, rather than tolerating home built folks who actually express their opinions.
Exxon makes some really bad choices and this lower tier “talent” is told to look elsewhere or be cut. So, they gotta go somewhere!
ExxonMobil is a government-subsidized commodity company.
Yet it creates competitive chaos among staff simply out of tradition.
Does that sound like a place you'd like to work for?
Part of EOM's hiring practice is to pinpoint people who thrive in a hyper-competitive environment. There was a day when some EOM talent would tire of the backstabbing and constant culling and move over to Chevron's blue skies, green pastures and chirping birds to grow their careers in a sensible fashion. Now, however, they would be moving over to a dysfunctional, DEI driven shell (no pun intended) of an oil company. At least EOM is still an oil company.
MW + Shareholders = MW's 🍆 and Circle J
MW + Shareholders + Management = 👉🖕 to employees
Employees + MW = ?????
Considering how unhappy most XOM employees are, it would make a lot of sense to pick off their best ones. Not that CVX is much better but working for XOM must be miserable.
I must have missed it. Has there been an influx of former Exxon employees lately? I haven't seen much hiring in the past couple years.
Chevron is hoping some of that ExxonMobil talent rubs off on them. But, seriously, it’s not that Chevron is stealing anyone’s talent. Chevron is an oil and gas company, so where else does a company like Chevron look for talent? Obviously, they’ll get it from wherever oil & gas experience can be found. In the US, certainly ExxonMobil is a good place to look.
There always people who don’t make the cut at Exxon. They are pushed out and drop down the ladder a rung or two to Chevron. Lower pay, more dis function but less stress and emphasis on quality.
Sir, this is a Wendy’s.
