Boomers must bo-m. If it's about something terrible like job losses at IBM in Canada, let's blame it on IMERGATION!!!!

Bo-m always. Bo-m like no one is watching. Be stupid. Be out of touch.

What the heck does this have to do with immigration policies? People in Canada aren't being RA'd so IBM can replace them with recent immigrants working in Canada, they're being RA'd so their jobs can be shipped overseas or just eliminated outright in the hope that AI will get there soon.

Freaking keyboard warriors have to make everything about their personal political team choice. Get out and touch some grass once in a while.

What an id--tic comment. Most Canadians where brought in when ibm bought and systematically destroyed the company they came in with. No canadian stole a job from an American.

@3sz I don't know if it's universal but I understand there's this thing called social security and the last time I heard numbers it was easily double what the Canada pension plan pays out, so once those are out of the way, it is up to Canadian employees same as US employees to save their own retirement funds.
under Ontario precedent, and Ontario citizen may be able to get one month of pay for every year of service, but that is by no means automatic. that is the track record of those who have gone to court, and if you get the right lawyer and fight the fight well, you might get that. of course you will probably need to pay some 25 to 30% of that to the lawyer. The average IBMer is either too scared or too financially constrained to fight this in court, so they end up getting something like 3 or 6 months of severance or something like that. I've seen posts on reddit that Mark cuban's CostPlus dr-gs have incredibly low prices - literally a tiny fraction of what you would pay in Canada.

I don't know where you get the idea that Americans have a "pension system". There is no such thing in the US, except for some union jobs. 401(k) is not a pension system.

We do not have guaranteed universal health insurance, prescription dr-gs are orders of magnitude more expensive in the US than in Canada, and many retirees and/or elderly people often have to choose between paying for their prescription dr-gs or paying the electricity or gas bill. For retirees, Medicare doesn't cover everything.

Be grateful for what you have, and stop complaining about paying taxes. In US metropolitan areas, the cumulative tax rate of federal + state + local + sales taxes is close to 50%.

If it is true that Canadian labor laws require 24 months severance, do us all a favor and stop complaining about your imaginary predicament. In the US one can be fired on the spot, with or without reason, and without any severance.

Your Americans have zero reason to envy Canada. our dollar is currently worth 37% less than the US dollar, the salary we make in Canadian dollars is not higher than the salary you make in US dollars, and on top of that, in most Canadian cities we pay more than most of the United States for just about everything. we also have a much less generous pension system. basically we have a standard of living that's a good 30% or more below that of the average American, and the one place where we do better is when it comes to severance, so be a little gracious and be happy for us for that one little thing.

Nice guys. Really. Rest assured that Canadians have not been left out of the process. Many many losses north of the border. But really nice. This page sometimes make me think ibm has been filled with infants anyway.
