Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Storage / Infrastructure layoffs

My manager hinted pretty darkly that we might be next. Does anyone have any word on that - or dev layoffs as a whole?

IBM has bet the company on the enterprise/hybrid cloud/sw modernization/linux strategy. Everything else is just milking the IP out of legacy investments. As the new strategy solidifies in 2024, expect IBM worldwide headcount to stabilize around 230-240k. Why do I say that? 275k revenue per head is the sweet spot for IBM. They would love to get to above 300k, BUT when 75% of your go to market is based on consulting services, you just can’t get there as 2000 work hours per year caps future revenue

Is this "find a partner" idea the same as what they did with Microelectronics? Let the asset wither on the vine with no investment, then pay someone to take over the operation like they did with the chip foundry?

IMHO, IBM will not survive as a mainframe-only company.

Infrastructure was slimmed down to try and find a partner for Power, Storage, and cloud (not hybrid cloud) That search continues. IBM has gone all in on mainframe as it’s a bet the company asset. Power, storage, and cloud as considered nice to have, but not considered strategic to bet the company on

Not in 2024 as infrastructure was hit hard in 2023. All bets off for 2025

does your manager come to office? 3x per week?
he/she might not yet used to it and feels a bit down.

Get something in NC or report to someone in Raleigh. Only safe bet if you ask me.

I haven't heard any word about that, but, sadly, it wouldn't be surprising :-/
