Thread regarding NetApp layoffs

Don't fall for leadership's bait

Layoffs are a costly operation for the company and C-level leadership knows it. They are gambling on folks leaving by their own choice due to RTO. It's really a win-win for them: they get to justify their costly real estate expenditures to stakeholders and maintain their tax breaks from local municipalities all while trimming down their payroll.

I suspect engineering and possibly other business units are somewhat "safe" right now. Not because C-level isn't eager to trim down the payroll and bump their bonuses, but because they are banking on you leaving by choice. They hope to induce some voluntary attrition because when you leave by choice they don't have to pay your severance out. RTO is only a play to please the board and to encourage people to leave. The latter of which will become only more apparent when they bump that "2-day thrive everywhere" to a "5-day thrive in office policy".

Don't take the bait! Finding a new position in this market is a complete disaster whether you are currently employed or not. It's better to have a leaving bonus on your way out.

"track employees and how they're being utilized. They're trying to determine how many hours each employee works and how effective they shuold be at work."

Isn't this something people managers should always be doing, managing the employees they're responsible for?

Some leaders and managers are starting to track employees and how they're being utilized. They're trying to determine how many hours each employee works and how effective they shuold be at work. This kind of thing is happening it at least a few orgs I know of and typically happens directly before downsizing / layoffs. Prepare yourselves.

Maybe you should actually look at the Portal which has RTO news on it and the fact you will get an email shortly. We've been advised to update our home address and then put in our nearest office - so its just a matter of time before they start checking the activity on the front door to see who is attending

I haven't heard a single thing about RTO since GK mentioning it in the all hands or whatever Q&A session it was. My BU and managers haven't said anything about it. A friend in another group has said the same thing. Both engineering groups. Doesn't seemed very inforced.

It’s like that everywhere. Make yourself indispensable snowflake. Layoffs will continue here, else where, everywhere. Doesn’t change anything and the world won’t accommodate to you.

No koolaid involved just hard smart work 😝

Dude, it’s not just a NetApp thing. Almost every company with physical offices is doing the same thing. And remember, the jobs out there that are truly remote you have to compete with people all over the world. And who’s to say those jobs won’t go RTO either?
