Thread regarding VMware layoffs

RTO Letters

Folks in PA and Atlanta started receiving letters. RTO is happening.

If you cannot make it the alternative is to take the package.

Anyone else?

Do whichever you wish. No correlation of that layoff has anything to do with WFH. It has more to do if specific organizations that BC still wanting to keep. Folks that were granted WFH were recommended by managers to the GM. Those folks likely get better bonuses due to higher talents perceived. You should thank your managers for that. It simply an RTO policy that have no repercussions. Newly hired employees may have no options other than RTO. So, those granted remote can WFH and get better bonuses.

"I have been remote even before Covid, the nearest office for me is over 100 miles. Just because you chose to be a slave doesn’t mean everyone else has to."

If the policy doesn't work for you, go find another job then. If you think working in office makes people slaves, you are just a spoiled giant baby.

“ It’s amazing how big the outcry is about RTO. Before Covid it was normal to get into an office every now and then. Most companies outside of VMware were office based. In fact before I joined VMware I was working for a trading company in the centre of London. Start time: 7am. I had to leave the house 4:15am to make it and wasn’t home until 8pm”

It’s amazing how big the outcry is about RTO. Before Covid it was normal to get into an office every now and then. Most companies outside of VMware were office based. In fact before I joined VMware I was working for a trading company in the centre of London. Start time: 7am. I had to leave the house 4:15am to make it and wasn’t home until 8pm. Was it great ? Of course not. But at the end you need to follow the money and in my case the train ticket was £6500 ($8300) a year.

My point here I guess is - too many people got too content at VMware and forgotten how good VMware paid for the fact you sat at home working at your pace (or be online and get paid because a lot of colleagues didn’t really do sh-t).

In fact PSO wasn’t much better. We didn’t get paid for travel (didn’t count towards utilisation) and I remember having to fly abroad for an 8am start on Monday and finish Friday 5pm

So I had to travel weekends more than I could count without getting paid or getting TOIL.

All I can say to people that rarely travelled or had to commute - welcome to the real work. Even Zoom is asking staff back to the offices.

It is weird that the only criteria for approving remote work is distance from your home, no matter the seniority. Juniors in my team are happily working from home, while a senior like me commutes 2 hours per day to prove that I am working.

Letters will go in waves by location. It largely depends on available seating capacity at the location. The way I would thing about it, if you’re within 50 miles of any Broadcom office and you’re remote, there’s a good chance you’ll be asked to come in at some point in the future.

Any idea why it does not affect every state with an office yet?

I believe the official answer is “shut up and get back to work”
