I have noticed the return of (early career) internal job postings. I thought these had gone away but they are back. This seems to me to be a way to discourage older workers from applying. Having the level as "associate" isn't enough, they throw (early career) on there to really let you know you are not welcome to apply! I thought it might be interesting to try a new career (SDET), but how do you do that when the only jobs you can apply for are senior level or higher? Even if I am willing to take a pay cut?

Because this is the virtual water cooler for whiners
Come on. Every company does grad hiring. Companies have to keep feeding the bottom levels while people are promoted. Any one from the outside would have no idea what associate means. Why does everyone on here seem to be looking for a way to moan about every thing?
"But the original post mentioned the Internal job board."

If you are a 50+ year old white male, good luck landing a decent job anywhere.
"This has been around forever, even back in the early 90s some positions were reserved for new grads, so that more experienced developers wouldn't take all these jobs. That's how lots of us got in"
But the original post mentioned the Internal job board.
Anyone remember the UPI (unpaid intern) classification?
And, of course, Interns
I read that as :
“You know sas has the reputation for terrible pay? The pay for this position will be even lower. Think: dollar tree cashier.”
I dont recall seeing them labeled openly as (early career) in the job website until the last few years. But they probably were reserved for you kids back then regardless.

They don't want older workers for those jobs. They only want young, cheap faces. SAS is doing all it can to atttact young people to bring down the average age of its employees. If you apply you will be rejected.
If you do apply to other jobs rest assured you will almost certainly lose a level or two in order to change jobs. It's a cr-ppy thing to do, forcing a rollback in title to change jobs. But people are doing it just to be able to do something different.
Don't know, but best of luck to you.
