Thread regarding 3M layoffs

I'm biding my time

I'm upskilling and waiting for a better job market. In the meantime, I'm doing the bare minimum at 3M. No overtime, no weekends, no taking on extra tasks that need to be done right away (I'm always so, so busy)...nothing but what I'm paid to do. I've been feeling so much better since I started doing it. I highly recommend it.

Reading the posts with interest. I have been out of the 3M bubble for about 3 years now. I was in the company for 8 years and during that time became very disillusioned with it all. My advice is to not show them any loyalty, as you are only seen as an expense. They will drop you without even thinking about it.

3M stock and morale are lower than most politicians.
I was eliminated and I know that more than 50% of the sales team I was part of have side gigs. One using the company car as a ride share for neighbors. Driving kids to school an sports. Another doing pizza deliveries. One has a part time sales job that they blend sales calls, actually charging #2 company miles on the 3M car. If he does not put in miles the company thinks he is not making calls. He is getting 65 cents a mile for the 3M car. Another is in real estate. Anytime I speak to former co workers they all say "I am working my way, the least I can get away with. " 3M sales managers just lie to CYA.

It should be obvious by now, you can be hardworking and doing a good or even great job, and you still can have your job eliminated at a moment's notice. Don't think for a second that 3M has any loyalty towards you.

And rest assured that your supervisor will have a clear conscience after cutting you, telling themselves that they were only doing what they were "forced" to do by their own bosses.

Overtime is not paid for some ... I put in over 240 hours of uncompensated time last year ... Physically on site for those hours. Well over 30 additional days of labor that was I scheduled to come in for and received no extra compensation at all.

Don’t bother loving your employer. They don’t love you back.

That doesn’t necessarily mean doing the bare minimum, but it doesn’t mean going nuts. Maintain balance and, unless you want to be laid off, don’t be so lazy as to paint a target on your back.

Overtime is paid; it’s not some grand gesture of goodwill. That being said, forced OT means the leadership isn’t doing their job.

I've been at four different MN-based Fortune 500 companies in the last 15 years, and I can confidently say that the number of people really doing their honest best is minimal, regardless of company.

By and large, people do a good enough job to keep their boss happy and keep the paychecks coming. The people ki-ling themselves for the company are the minority, and they're being taken advantage of.

As long as you're performing at a reasonable level, there's no reason why you should feel bad. The company won't reward you for going above and beyond, just like they don't punish people for being average.

Look to the 1999 classic film, "Office Space". The main character, Peter Gibbons, realizes life can be much better & more fulfilling when he works his way.

I've found the less I invest personally, the more the company rewards me.

That's my secret: I was slacking before WYW, and I'm still slacking now.

Agreed that work you way is good. I see of similar regional colleagues JG15+ enjoying the work at the comfort of their homes. Have time to go gym during work hours, cook meals, run errands, take naps, all in days work. This company is great.

As long as they keep WYW, this place is good enough to collect a check. Love watching TPIR showcase, making lunch, doing a few emails, then taking a nice afternoon nap. All in a day's work.

The key is appearing productive and kissing up to the boss. That will get you at least a 2 performance ranking and a 2 percent raise.

Yes they would, worked hard and was a devoted 3Mer for 12 years and one morning I was abruptly notified my services were no longer needed and it was over. This is no longer the same 3M of old, very sad.

Smart move. They'd eliminate your job in a heartbeat either way.
