Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Notice vs Quit

Anyone know if the company will fire you if you put in your notice. I’ve heard that happen to people I’ve talked to. Don’t know if it would be in their best interest at this point to pay the unemployment.

@bnet+1rMxACj2 Do you believe they will actually follow through on that promise? There’s a long list of people that have been promised the same and are still waiting.

I assume they mean the company isn’t cutting an unemployment check to the former employee. You’re saying the same thing.

“ Company doesn’t pay Unemployment in any case. Those benefits are paid by your home state.”

==Huh? In what area does the company not pay into unemployment?

Mistype your managers email and send your notice. Don’t show up and see how long they take to figure out when to stop paying you. Schwab doesn’t deserve a notice and is a bridge that should be burned. You don’t owe them anything.

I intended to put in my two week resignation and they told me my resignation would be for that day. They didn’t fire me though. Just told me it would be immediate.

I’m pretty sure that in Texas, the company is paying the unemployment.

When I put in notice i had to work the full 2 weeks. It was up to the department head. If you don’t put in the department minimum you would not be in good standing for rehire if you so care. I was going to a competing firm. The explanation I was given is if you are leaving you already have had time to pull what you needed so they might as well get 2 weeks or more out of you.

Sts. Gave two weeks notice. At the end of the first week they told me I did not have to work the second week. They paid me the full notice period. Positive it was so my team did not keep hearing about the great move I was making.

Speaking of notice, I have been contemplating mine. I have always provided generous notice in the past. Given how I feel about treatment at Schwab I am not inclined to give much notice. What are you doing.

Policy is to allow the employee to remain unless circumstances warrant immediate departure. This includes their moving to specific companies that are competitive or conflict concerns, or if the employee is deemed a risk should they remain.

If they pay you through the notice period but tell you to stop working and turn everything in, that's not being fired - you won't get unemployment. If you put in notice and they immediately fire you w/o pay through the notice period, whether you are eligible for unemployment depends on if they have evidence that you were fired for cause — e.g., were you coming into the office as required during RTO (that would be the easiest case for the company). Now, there are many exceptions where you can quit and may still obtain unemployment (health-related, spousal relocation, etc.). Assuming in this case those don't apply, but look at https://www.twc.texas.gov/employer-resources/unemployment-benefits-basics — this is for Texas.

I’ve seen it happen both ways. Depends on the org leadership.

Do they not allow you to work your notice if you are taking a position at another brokerage firm?
