Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Poor management and direction

Cisco has great employees but there's not much we can do when the leadership is bad and all the directives that come from the top only serve to reaffirm their incompetence. This company could thrive once again if we could get the right people to lead it. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Cisco has great employees...

Not when it comes to developing software. That's why you've been acquiring for more than 30 years and most of your development budget goes to bug fixing. That you don't already know this says you're definitely not a "great employee."

Relevant opinion article last week in the NY Times written by a former Cisco SVP — absolutely nails it:

A short trip through the static analysis of any branch at any time should prove the worker bees are no more competent than their management. After that start reading through some of the DDTs for problems that were found by the customers, which means they not only escaped development but testing as well.

Highest priority. My favorite from id--t management 101.
I don’t need a $500K per year VP to tell me the highest priority, any goose can work that out. What I need from an exec is to give me direction on what to drop; then permission to abandon those projects; and finally to back me when the inevitable hot backlash comes for doing so. But no, 99% of execs will tell you to somehow “make it all work”, “work smarter not harder”, etc etc.
And they wonder why the achievers get burned out?

I’m going through the same thing right now. Horrible leadership being too little, too late bringing features to market. Everything is the highest priority too.
