Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Innovation

Anybody involved with any innovation lately? How about our Engineering group, any projects in the works? Feels off around the Center, something is surely coming.

Sadly no it's not a focus at all right now and has not been for years. Everyone's been so focused on the spinoff. Right now all efforts are focused on existing product and tech we already have. No focus at all on any new efforts. And morale is way down.

Did 3M really invent the expandable paper concept? HexcelPack has a variety of products.

not forgetting the numerous scientists who have retired/resigned/layoff in the recent years plus closure of many R&D labs.... how will new CEO focus on NPI innovation without p.i.s.s.i.n.g off wall street?

Just create a new SKU number for an existing item and count it as a new product.

How can you have innovation when NPIs have been dramatically slashed across the board for all divisions?

Nobody is interested in taking up new technology and moving it forward.

If by “innovation” you mean finding new ways to injure operators, yeah there’s lots of innovation.

As somebody who worked in on new products and new technologies over 26 years I can tell you that innovation is completely dead and has not been a priority for the better part of a decade. Making Post its smaller or new colors or yet another multilayer film that does the same thing as its predecessor is not very innovative. Sad really…

The people outside of 3M doesn’t understand that innovation is far from dead. The technical culture in the company remains, but management is still trying to “pick the winners” which has proven to be difficult. Plus “make a little sell a little” while still possible just does not move the needle sufficiently. The best product developers need to be the ones to call the shots, not the business folks … and technical management needs to fend off the vp’s who want to “champion” projects that are mostly long shots.

Innovation is not a good investment.
It's faster and cheaper to buy a company with the technology required and integrate it into 3M.

Innovation requires investment and risk taking. nEither of these are in favor at 3M.

Innovation died when smothered by DMAIC sick sigma imposed on research over 20 years ago by GE and later Boeing buffoonish CEO Mcnerney.

Boeing took its cues from Mack and now had Innovation in flight, with parts and doors falling off at 30000 feet.
