Moving Roles

Question for everyone. I just started back at Cisco again a few months ago and a role opened up that is a grade higher than mine. Am I allowed to move roles before a year is up? I’ve heard yes and no

It's very rare. I have seen, in rare cases, where a contractor comes in on some team, and between 6 mo to a yr finds an internal opportunity on a different team and applies and gets the job. It usually pi---s off the vendor, who didn't make their normal "profit" off a 1-yr's contract and has to work hard to backfill that role to keep some other vendor from filling it, but the team manager of the team the contractor is leaving never seemed to mind. And, in even a more rare situation, a contractor came in after me, was waiting his "turn" to get converted when a FTE role came along that matched his current role on the team and he was "encouraged" to apply and got the job. Again, the vendor was pi---d because they had to backfill the contractor role, and didn't manage it so it got poached by another vendor company. Myself, and 4-6 other contractors who'd been on the team in other roles for more than 18 months were all pi---d because this guy managed to jump the line and bypass all of us. But none of that really applies to your question.

The reason for the 1-yr rule is to keep a manager from foisting off a bad hire to some other team instead of doing the work to fire the bad hire, or keep someone from just getting their foot in the door and then looking for a higher paying role and making Cisco have to waste time & effort reposting the first job and going through candidates all over again. It can happen, if your current manager really wants you to succeed and it's a good role for you, but most don't want to deal with the headache of rehiring after putting in the effort to hire you in the first place.

I personally applied for a different role with in 3 weeks of joining cisco with the help of the manager, who initially hired me. He had justified and informed the HR and future manager

No. Any manager allowing someone to leave prior needs to be examined for not holding someone to their commitment or is passing a problem along. Zero accountability, which is part of what got csco where it is.

you are allowed to move only with approval from your current manager, meaning your current manager has the ability to block the move if you are less than 1 year in the role

Ask whomever is hiring for the role...

No - you are not. Even the application will require you to be there over 1 year.
