I am getting offered role in Calgary in Engineering for 20% bump compared to what I make now. Friend told me to read this page. Little concerned now, can people tell me what to expect. I need to give answer back by end of the week. I am not unhappy right now, but I felt I was underpaid in my current company.

Last I heard, with all the ported jobs, is that Imperial is way way over staffed and a hiring freeze is in place. Many corporate jobs can be performed at an affordable cost at one of the lower cost GBCs. The performance measurement system is deceptive is an exercise that is simply going through the motions to give the process a semblance of integrity. Employee rankings are established way in advance not based on performance but likeablity. There is very little to distinguish performance when the work does not require high skills or holds people accountable. That is why many young professionals are leaving the company to pursue a career elsewhere.
No hiring freeze at BTC
BS!!! Imperial Oil has a hiring freeze in effect for all of 2024.
This post is from a TROLL!! Please don’t respond. Imperial Oil currently has a hiring freeze till the end of 2024.
But, the question is...did they accept the offer? Every story needs an ending.
I don't see why not. 20% money takes quite a few years of raises. No different than taking an expat to Saudi, you know it's not going to be pleasant, but good money is good money.
Did OP accept the offer
Imperial is moving all their engineering jobs to India. Just think about that before you join.
They do fire people here and there, they usually corner and persuade to get folks to resign, or for low performer through performance assessment process, usually with pretty OK severance.
When hiring our talking points used to day that we haad never laid off or downsized (in a long time) but now that talking points is removed since we did some in 2020/1
You should read glassdoor for a more balanced review. Though Imperial rarely fires people, unlike other companies. Though the ranking system is highly demotivating, though a bad ranking does not impact your base salary.
If you take it remember that you are doing it for money less for everything else - lots of unhappy people here, and even more with XOM (you might have to work a lot with them depending on your role). There's no performance bonus at imperial so take that into consideration.
Is there timing of joining that’s better
Point of note, Imperial does not have bonuses for staff. RSU (stock bonuses) are only available for higher ranked individuals in their respective CL (classification level). The ranking / assessment process is a real doozy, it’s very competitive but sometimes a lot of it comes down to how well managers know you…it’s not a good system, leaves folks that are told they perform well all year by their supervisor quite disappointed.
Any of the positives you hear and are being sold from a supervisor to join Imperial, cut the optimism by about 70% and that’ll be closer to reality. There’s a prolific over promise and under deliver when it comes to hiring, especially experienced hires.
Please update your regrets and frustrations one year from now.
Will be looking for it.
Take the offer, keep ur resume up to date. Brown nose and get all the training u can get. Jump ship on ur first bad ranking
Go for it.
