Medtronic cuts suppliers and manufacturing sites, CEO says in supply chain and operations update

Medtronic is closing at least five manufacturing sites, consolidating distribution centers and stopped doing business with approximately 200 suppliers as part of a push to improve its operations and supply chain.
That’s according to a presentation by Medtronic Chair and CEO Geoff Martha at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference today emphasizing the focus on profitability at the world’s largest medical device manufacturer.

“One of the biggest opportunities for us to leverage our scale and drive leveraged earnings over time is with our global operations and supply chain,” Martha said. “We spent nearly $11 billion on cost of goods sold last year. That’s a lot. And over half of the company’s employees are involved in global operations and supply chain.”

“Our top priority is restoring our earnings power — full stop,” he said, citing Medtronic’s recent reorganizations and changes to incentives, product approvals and launches, and new initiatives like the Medtronic AI Center of Excellence.

I just saw someone get promoted by outsourcing a bunch software testers overseas. I can't wait for that quality drain.

With all the cuts to quality, Medtronic is going to be like Boeing. I look forward to the Netflix documentary on the downfall of Medtronic.

What happened to "Engineering the Extraordinary"? All I'm seeing is cost-cutting, which translates to quality-cutting. Oh and rebranding (i.e. marketing spin) on existing products labeled as "new"

In regards to distribution, he's talking about what has already been talked about. Getting out of pedricktown, swedesboro, swinnea (project Sonoma).

Post from TheLayoff.com

He is probably listing sites they are already in progress to close or have closed - Sullivan Lake, mfg at Santa Clara, Rice Creek

He's just lying about the distribution centers. There's no reason to close any.

Revenue is the best medicine! It seems we have lost the art of innovating and selling. And therefore no revenue!

The only thing that you have control of - Costs. So just cut costs!

Unfortunately, this is leading to heavy market share loss. Most of the categories, we have lost the first position and the ExCom is clueless!

Earnings don’t happen without sales
Sales don’t happen without products
Customers don’t get products without distribution
Customers don’t buy products that have safety problems, aren’t available, aren’t reliable, aren’t cost effective
What is Medtronic’s value proposition? Earning is not a value proposition

Yes. We need to stop whining and complaining and start working by putting in long hours, complete our goals and push others to do their job.
Google just announced 5k layoffs last night.

Otherwise those 500M inventory will come out of cutting heads.

Everyone keeping an eye on inventory? Half a billion off plan, and it will hurt everyone on cash flow.

So a lot of back orders. Project Managers are going to have shock pikachu faces when they see the new lead times.

GM and his friends are running this once great company into the ground for short term profits.
