Thread regarding IBM layoffs

No need for a a computer science degree to work in tech

That's the thinking of our leadership. And then we wonder why things are going to he-l in a handbasket.

Right, look at IBM... a lot of smart people with degrees, but a lot of totally d-mb people.

I got 10 bages in AI training from IBM.
used chatgtp and passed.

I would fail the essay writing.
most of us engineer waste time and direction making decisions by meetings.

If some can speak up and tell everyone in English or Latin how bad it is, it might help.
Listening another skill most of us engineers lack in my view.

Hiring more craftsman, technicians with the attitude to makes things work would be great.

broken pipes cannot be talked away with AI.

In a partial defense of Candy, there is some (but only some) merit to what he says. Steve Jobs, for example, wasn't the techie in Apple (it was Wozniak). Documented accounts of his life showed significant interests in Calligraphy and Art, which were reflected in the design choices of Apple products. As far as I know, he was neither a coder nor an engineer, yet he had vast influence on Apple's product portfolio and the company overall.

HOWEVER...Candy goes off the rails in thinking that AI will make tech workers obsolete and be replaced by "right brain thinkers". Every sociology, poly sci and psychology major I have ever met has harbored a secret desire to replace "those deplorable engineers" and run the world by themselves. Now they are in management, and think that AI will give them that chance...but do you honestly think it will happen?

F*** NO. In the conformist society that we have created in this world, replacing the tech workers with liberal arts majors would turn this planet into a hellscape of unimaginable proportions. The mind trembles at the possibilities...can you picture a surgeon with AI training and technology but the mindset and discipline of your typical communications major? A psych major? A sociology major? For every good (or maybe even great) surgeon or pilot or president, you'd get dozens or even hundreds of truly awful, horrendous, no-good ones. It's one thing for a Greek studies major to get accepted to med school, but even they have to undergo extensive medical training to become a doctor. You wouldn't want a Greek major to be your doctor just because they have AI enhancements. They need to have some kind of formal tech training.

All you need is a pulse to work at IBM. If you are in senior management you don't even need that.

I don't think you even need a high school degree to work here tbh...

This serves two purposes for upper managment. They get to virtue signal on paper ceilings and opportunity for all. But the real purpose is cheaper labor.
