Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Best place to work right now (BU)?

Curious what folks think are the “best” business units to work in right now. I use best loosely because things aren’t going well right now as a whole given the admonishing emails from our leadership.

TCO? Permian not looking too good. SJV can’t get permits, though they surpassed expectations from the start of the new year. How’s RBU? Any overseas potential?

ABU, the place that dreams are made of. Where else can anyone use a gender neutral toilet where you can chuck a sh1t, wash your hands and charge your phone at the same time.

The best place to work right now at Chevron is any place where they don’t know you exist, not even your supervisor knows you work for him/her. Your name is not on any org chart. You only exist in the HR paper files and payroll is on autopilot. You get your annual salary structure, that’s all. But don’t frown, you don’t have to ever show up at the office.

Whichever BU that doesn’t have nepotism.

Maybe time to audit direct reports and family members…start with SJV (Sup & bro-in-law) then find the nepo babies costing the company elsewhere.

Contracts use to require diversity (women, minority, small business etc)? Odd nobody talks about that anymore.

CCS is the business with the most near term potential in NE. They have assets under development in Texas, CA, Australia, and other US locations, plus MOUs in place in other geographies. It is very much in an appraisal and development phase, but at least you can see where it is going. Other businesses might be 5-10 years out.

Bestplace is RBU, it is expanding after recent acquisition. Next is CNE if things turn profitable it would be a great place to be, it is a bit of gamble but if you are younger than 35, it is worth to put your bet on it.

@4ycc, yes, CBU has all those perks. The trouble is, they have no production to speak of, no exploration, and no upside. Kitimat was (will be) a dismal failure. Expect a sell-off and closure within the decade.

CBU. That reminds me of the Saturday Night Live quiz where they would name a sort of famous person and contestants had to guess if the person was dead or just Canadian.

You are forgetting about CBU, excellent business unit where American expats enjoy skiing, fishing, hunting and hiking in the gorgeous mountains, plus everyone speaks English :)

I sure do hope any soon-to-be college grads or interns are reading this thread. You should realize that unless you are bringing in the ability to walk on water, have a patent on the better mouse trap, or have figured out a cure for the common cold, Chevron is going to be a dead-end place for your skills. You'll be leaving, voluntarily or otherwise, before year 10 of your career.

CNE is the epitome of passive aggressive culture with the leadership team currently in place. Smile, “go team go” platitudes and then a lot of “FU” undressing when things don’t come together in their P1% chance of outcome. CP is the ultimate Di^8 H^5d who throws everyone under the bus…..his team, and anyone he needs to work with from outside of CNE. I can’t wait to get out of CNE. CNE has in many ways begun to ostracize itself from the rest of the company. It is throwing into the face of all other Houston based BUs and functions its fancy coffee, barista, continuous lunches served onsite, etc. Etc. Etc. BIGGER PICTURE, wow - sorry to see MW and PB making promises year after year on MCBU that are beginning to crash - you can only kick the ‘ol can so long b4 u run outta room and the piper is PAID. TCO was the same story as MCBU, just got to end of book sooner. sad state these days as MW had many +s but his -‘s are going to tank this company.

It depends whether you want to build your career or just be a snake-oil salesperson jumping from one circus sideshow to another. Forget the conventional oil BUs, their legacy assets are drained and there's nothing (either exploration or MCPs) in the pipeline, no pun intended. MCBU could be a real career opportunity (as opposed to just making money), 'so little talent and so much to do' as @1otu put it. If you like to make money while someone else does the work, watch out for Hess Guyana assets, you'll see lots of high-pots trying to get in to 'management' positions there while Exxon does all the homework and decision-making. Repeat of the whole Shell Perdido experience. CNE? Yes. Look at Chevron history. Anything with the theme of 'new ventures' in its title is fly-paper for empty high-pots and those who failed at the 'old ventures'. Big budgets for a while with nothing to show for it. You can cling to CNE for the hoopla in the short-term, but be prepared to jump ship when thing (inevitably) go south.

Midstream companies are mostly unfazed by price changes. Chevron’s pipeline BU is probably the safest place to be.

MCBU- such little talent and so much to do. Easy to shine.

CNE. They have hot lunches and breakfast brought into them at least once a week. They have the best floor with a coffee server, sleeping room, and great toilet paper.

CNE has the most money and perks and loosest expectations. It will be fun until the music stops. What are you looking for in a BU? Exotic locations? Massive overseas premiums? Stable low-risk domestic job? Learning and development? Advancement?

CNE for now. But eventually our id--t managers will realize the business model is not sustainable and then everyone will get laid off.
