Thread regarding 3M layoffs

A total reset in strategy and executive leadership is necessary

I’m a former 3Mer with nearly 20 years experience with roles in lab and commercial for a few businesses. 2008-2009 was tough, but understandable. At that point I felt that there was fat to cut, and the cuts seemed targeted at reducing that fat. The rumor is that 3M may have absorbed some legal costs associated with wrongful or discriminatory separations. Since then terminations seem to be entirely based on risk management.
Morale never has been lower, and it’s not even close. Even the doldrums of 08-09 weren’t this rotten.
A total reset in strategy and executive leadership is necessary.

Give Tireman some credit. He knows he rode Schultz's coattails at Starbucks to land his big CEO job pushing Tires. He also knows the Tire board was going to see through him so he jumped ship to MMM. He knows he's clueless & hired his son's firm to think in place of him while he collects million$ per year. All he had to do was convince buffoon Roman about a "Firewall".

He’s collecting a seven figure paycheck until MR departs. Whoever replaces MR will hire someone who is actually qualified for the job and didn’t work at Starbucks.

I doubt Mike Roman’s credentials prior to getting promoted to CEO would have gotten him past the first round of resume reviews for CEO at any other company. The same seems to be true of many of the senior executives who are long time 3Mers in positions where they were “appointed” without the job being posted. 3M was a top class company but, sadly, it’s policy of advancing long time 3Mers who have many issues and limited leadership skills is a big part of why 3M is failing.

Times have changed and 3M needs to think more globally and realize longevity is great but it does not mean you have the skills to be a senior leader. We also need to look for the best people to employ without regard to s-x, race, nationality, religious affiliation, age, marital status and more.

I totally agree there is an ethics problem. We have all seen in history and in other failed corporations what happens when people fail to enforce the law, fail to enforce their own Code of Conduct and discriminate based on age and more.

Can the board be removed for not doing their job to represent the interests of shareholders? I'm too lazy to do the math, but what has the return on 3M stock been since Roman took over, compared to the S&P 500? That alone should be grounds for the removal of the entire executive conference and the BOD.

3M has an ethics problem. The JE decisions have been and will continue to include decision criteria that is not defendable. In combination with outside leadership that are here for a short time and you have the recipe for discrimination disaster. As an example, if you are over 50 then welcome to one of the target zones. Take care.
