Recently got an automated email that I was assigned a mentor for the 'executive mentorship' program. Background is that I was an experienced hire with now a few years Exxon experience. I asked my supervisor what it was about, she downplayed it but mentioned 'hi potential' was designated and historical high performance is what got in me in. Does this get reassessed frequently? Or does your potential tag stick with you? What do i actually do with this designation, or what can I expect? Not an ankle grabber or brown noser, just a hard worker. I've been on this forum long enough and I know the sentiment towards HiPos. TIA.

It means you are high potential, it is true that your supervisor maybe didn’t even know about this program (based on their potential). I got one too and I really enjoy it and found it valuable. In theory, with the new system, your potential can change. Discuss all these questions with your mentor, they will guide you. Good luck!
You only get it if you are high potential. Typically younger folks. It pairs you with an executive for general mentoring. Haven’t gotten too much out of mine yet. But continuing it can help you broaden your connections.
Just keep performing well and you will stay in the program and progress faster than most in the company. Really helps if you want to be in the manager track.
Potential is assessed yearly, but really only changed when you reach a "break point" (for example - have you made a certain job or CL by a certain age). We have too many folks tagged these days as many jobs are being pushed to lower CLs, but if you aren't tagged you don't have any chance to progress.
Executive mentoring program is a ~2 year pairing and they will drop you if you don't maintain a certain trajectory.
“F*** OFF”!!
Don’t come here to brag.
Yeah, I got that one too and failed the phishing test. Damn. OWD to NSI now.
It’s an Exxonmobil spam test. Don’t click on it.
Your supervisor might not be in the know- and could be PO’d that you got picked. Ask the person they assigned to you…. And it could mean some training classes coming your way. Good luck.
I was assigned an executive mentor. Actually, it did nothing for me. I was instructed to not talked about being selected.
My mentor is well connected but has little to offer in terms of navigating XOM or the work. The mentor was a decade younger than me so it was ridiculous to hear some of the life advice. Suspect the person was promoted based on likability than leadership skills.
As an experience hire, I had more technical and managerial background than my assigned mentor. It was just a poor match. I was more successful on my own in making informal connections with people inside the company who I respected and they respect me/ know my work.
In my opinion, many of the best people left or retired from the company. So don’t expect to get much out of any mentoring program. Go through the motion if you must, but it’s more important to create your own network.
I would think you are best to understand more from your supervisor. I think I'd get you first to reflect on why you are asking this question here, and not to your Supervision as you are Hipo. What can we learn from that behavior?
good to hear a hard worker making the list. wish you all the best.
Seriously congrats on working hard to get to this point. Don’t let the people on this board get you down. Most of the people on this board are miserable and misery loves company.
