Thread regarding Hy-Vee layoffs

Why do you stay working for HyVee.

With all of the employees on here complaining about working for HyVee. I would like to know what keeps you working for them. I would like to hear some of the pro and cons of working for HyVee? I’ve left HyVee 5 years ago and it wasn’t easy. I loved my fellow co workers. Some of the best people I have ever worked with. The reason I left was because I could not put up with Randy’s crazy plans. He was driving the company into the ground. Leaving HyVee wasn’t easy but it has paid off. I’ve had some failures after leaving HyVee but I was okay with that. Now 5 years later I have tripled my salary and work about 35 hours a weeks. Looking back leaving was my best decision. Pleas give input. Maybe Jeremy will change something from our answers.

For me, I thought that I had been there too long and was making too much money start over at a new company. Learned that was definitely not true when I left.

About 80% of the employees are part-time, yet they are not allowed to attend meetings to learn about the decisions being made about their own department, the store or being part of making it better for everyone. A selling point at my interview was that being 'Employee Owned' means that when the store is doing well I will see a bonus on my paystub. After many years working there I have never received a single bonus. The company told mainstream media that a few employees abused the daily employee discount, so they decided to cut it for months, then eventually offered it for a once per week employee discount. I've worked for a number of grocery stores, and other retail companies, but this is the first grocery company that does not understand what an employee availability days/hours actually means. The store will allow verbal abusive behavior/shouting/name-calling, whether it be managers, employees or customers towards employees. They do not do reviews, mediate, follow up or discipline if you report abusive behavior/shouting/name-calling. They allow male employees or male managers to call female employees/managers "honey", "sweetie", make inappropriate comments and touch them without their permission. Corporate staff will come into the store, not smiling, being unfriendly, ignore employees and customers, give obvious dirty looks toward some employees and managers, but will give - oftentimes negative - feedback, tell female managers to make changes to their departments, while chatting at length with male managers, then leave. The store will push absorptive pads under malfunctioning coolers for months instead of repairing or replacing them due to the water leaking onto the floor. We no longer have security guards and no managers know why. The company wants the employees to de-escalate instead. Raises are no longer given on merit, but if you add a lot of tasks and request many meetings with management you may get a chance. Shoplifting, classism and favoritism continues. Don't get me started about their behavior toward special needs employees or people with disabilities. They do not violate Title 7, religious beliefs, though.

I stay because I have hope. As foolish as it may be, I have hope that someday HV will be what it once was or close to it. It's getting harder and harder to stay positive. I am just a full time nobody that enjoys busting my butt. I have worked for the good and bad over the years. It's really hard when you find a manager you like, one that cares about their people, and they get ripped out from under you. I have invested too many years to move on. I have put my heart and soul into the company and I would hate to give that up. I know know though....no matter how much you care, how much family time you have lost....you are replaceable. I am aware and keep my chin up and hope for the best.

Sounds like this guy is in an abusive relationship. You sound like those girls that get beat by their boyfriends but won’t leave them. Dude HyVee is mistreating you. You don’t have to stay at HyVee. You need to find another job. Stop giving 100 percent at HyVee if they don’t ever give you anything back. Sure they pay you but so does every other job. HyVee jobs underpay their employees. HyVee does have so good paying jobs but those are the select few. I tripled my income since I left HyVee and work 35 hours a week. When I left I was a perishable manger with 12 years at HyVee.

Isn't caring about the bottom line kinda his job? I don't need anyone caring about me. Just make the company strong and I'll be fine. Some of the whiny people on this site only want to be taken care of, without giving anything in return.

Most of the time I do like my job at Hy-Vee as a stock manager. The thing I hate the most is what I see as corporate bs. They do not understand what the average manager or worker goes through. They would rather come in and complain about something stupid rather than fix the problem. I have worked at other jobs other than Hy-Vee and I can say it's the same those places too. The average worker has been forgotten.

The main reason why people don’t leave is because they feel safe. They don’t believe in themself enough to bet on themself. Take a chance on yourself. You will be surprise on what can happen when you take your career into your own hands. Don’t go through life working for a company that you are not happy with. It’s your life not Jeremy Gosch. Don’t let these guy control you anymore. Trust me they don’t care about you. They only care about the bottom line.
