The railroads reasoning for getting rid of the carmen is so the railroad doesn't have bad orders to set out of outbound trains. The railroad knows the utility or conductor won't find any during inspections because they don't know what to look for and aren't going to be trained on what to look for. I know this, because the utility employees doing the inspections here in Denver, haven't been trained on how to do a proper inspection. They only received limited training on how to use the yard air device, that's it.

Typical transportation, guy comments that Carmen do nothing you guys seem very clueless on anything mechanical let alone understanding what we do for a job. We are waiting on you to set the train. We aren’t just sitting in our trucks.

what do carman find? Most all bad orders are generated by detectors.Pull rods and lace cars slap air on open angle co-k on rear car make sure air then highball.Conductors can do that. While working yard job trainmaster was questioning a carman how he does his job sounded really bad this confirmed he was doing his job and others uhhh----.

If they get rid of Carmen.. Who will release the handbrake, on the head car? We all know the conductor can’t..That’s why they call us

if it rolled in, it'll roll out. Basically saying you don't need any carman.

They are looking at reducing the cost of mechanical and engineering. Contractors to do the job faster and cheaper on overhauls and repairs. It has just started guys. They are going to cut deep.

Other railroads are hiring guys I suggest moving and moving on. The writing is on the wall and the sooner you move on the more seniority you’ll have at you new RR job. One doesn’t have to look far maybe try typing railroad jobs indeed or go to rrb.gov and looky there other jobs are available in the world besides the one you have. You just need to apply to the new job you see on the company website and if your experience is mechanical, carman, clerk, Te&y etc you’ll be amazed at how many other opportunities there are outside of your current job and company. Most of us experienced people can move to different companies very easily and I know many that have and are extremely happy. So if people can find the time to at least explore other opportunities they may be surprised to find other railroad jobs do indeed exist. I had a coworker with many years of experience at my location and he was 2 from the bottom of seniority and always afraid of getting laid off he applied to another RR got hired and they hired 5 guys in his class and like 15 six months later and within 6 months he was sitting better than he would have at my terminal after a lifetime due to the small size of the terminal. Is the grass always greener no, but you’ll never know unless one explores other options. Life is short don’t get to comfy and don’t think no other opportunities exist guys.

Buyouts? 😂 This company hates the mechanical department.. They’d be more likely to give every transportation employee a new truck, before they did anything for mechanical

The OP is very correct. Reducing headcount in mechanical no matter how its done. You will see buyouts soon, that's their way of "trying to help." Once you see these, its only a matter of time.

West Coast will see a 90% reduction of forces due to losing their biggest customer. EVERY location in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Nevada will see MASSIVE layoffs. It’s already been decided on and will begin early March at the latest. Find a new job NOW if you’re employed by the UP and work in any of the states mentioned above.
