This is indeed game end for GF. This UMC entry and access of finfet tech will open the doors of foundry to second tier customers looking for capacity and lower cost. Imagine some day Intel opening up their 7 nm to UMC. Smart move by UMC. Visionary step by Intel to establish its supremacy in world.
intel went through 5 rounds of layoffs in 2023 and warned of more layoffs in 2024
I think it is 12 nm where UMC and Intel planning to capture strong tech order.
The title says 22nm but the text says 12nm? I'm not sure UMC has the capability to do 12nm, certainly GF does in Malta NY only. This may be where Intel comes in, gives UMC customers a path in Low Power/RF beyond 22nm at UMC. GF has cancelled 12DX so many times once again we will be playing catch-up or lose the market totally. The only hope for GF long term is for Intel to buy them, otherwise it will be a slow painful death one fab at a time.
