Thread regarding IBM layoffs

AI hype

Can’t wait to see how AI hype will shake out. However it does, one thing is sure - once the current AI bubble bursts, some will walk away with bags full of cash.

What's the difference between "AI" and "automation"? That's why it's easy to slap an "AI" label on anything.

My understanding is that watsonx is made for enterprise clients to supply their own generative AI model, or to have IBM consultants help them develop one.

I guess I'm trying to see what the value proposition is...what does IBM bring to the table that the customer can't get somewhere else?

Anyone who has actually used any AI tools quickly realizes that there is nothing unique about IBM's watsonx. The heart of any AI is the "Generative AI" model. This is the thing that takes an input like a prompt and produces the AI-generated output such as a summary of the article or chat text response or a picture. IBM has barely any models of its own. All it is doing is letting clients run public-domain models from other providers (Meta, Google etc.). Its watsonx is just a UI and an API built around the above. These interfaces allow users to send an input, select a model, and receive the output. These things are already possible with platforms like Huggingface, openAI and other providers. There is nothing that IBM has that would be beneficial to enterprise customers any more than what is already out there.

There are different kinds of winners. Some win in the financial sense...they get lots of cash from the AI trend no matter what.

Others win in terms of mindshare...how much will others try to emulate them? Whose AI technology, for lack of a better word, is superior in some way (even if it is not the most commercially successful)? Which AI will go down in history as one of the greats, and which AI will drown in obscurity, never to be seen again? Maybe there's a middle-of-the-road option that lots of customers end up using, even if they don't realize it.

I don't know where IBM will end up.

It AI hype, few years back, it was cloud, then hybrid cloud and before that, it was something else.
So many mistakes.
The truth, both the executives and the engineers are not great .
