Thread regarding Nielsen layoffs

A preview of Karthik's speech today

He will begin by saying that business was better in Q4 but it wasn't enough to cover shortfalls earlier.

He will say a bunch of word salad that contains the following important phrases:

"Where we work"
"How we work"
"Centers of Excellence"

What all the gobbledygook will mean is this: Elliot has hired McKinsey. If you don't know what McKinsey is, google for "McKinsey John Oliver." McKinsey has developed the "brilliant" strategy to replace EVERYONE in the US and Europe ("High COL countries" as they say it), with people in cheap countries.

The "centers of excellence" will all be cities they're hiring in, like Bangalore. If you are not already in India, then your job is at a very high risk NO EXCEPTIONS.

This will not a be a big one-and-done layoff like we've seen in the past. This is expected to take at least a year, but over the next year most of the people at this company will be gone, especially those in:

Operations
Technology
Outcomes
and to a somewhat lessor extent Data Science.

I don't know about Gracenote since I don't know anyone over there. I think that they will be hit hard but not as hard as Audience measurement.

Leadership has been fighting this for at least six months. Everyone knows this will fail , but Elliot and their McKinsey mo--ns are insistent. Leadership has been offered bonuses "upon successful execution of The Plan." Golden handcuffs. Everything is very secretive. They seem to think they will be able to hire our replacements, get us to train them, and then fire us.

If you're on H1B you need to leave now. If you need your paycheck you need to leave now. If you can recover from getting laid off then stick around for a severance, but you will be required to train your replacement.

I hope this is the kick some people need. I know some people have been here many years. Some of you are passionate about your work. Some of you have all your friends here. We all need to come to terms with the fact that this company is already dead. Accept it and move on before it ruins our lives.

Wonder if the OP has any new insights since they were correct with TownHall speech. Who at this point is in the know on which layoffs come next? One would think that the people who do the actual work are safe for now but that the current leaders should now be training their own replacements .

It's time that workers in companies like this unionize before it is too late. A strike right now, or sick out what have you on a very important sporting event coming up would send a strong message. If clients are not pleased with the direction the company is taking how quickly do you think things would change.

Use your brain. They said themselves this will be ongoing over the course of the year. It’s not going to be a one and done type situation.

I wish the OP would come in here and tell us WHEN. I thought for sure today. Sounds like it’s going to be a slow rip off of the bandaid.

Because it was someone that was in the room where these decisions were made and had the heart to give some transparency here since no one was going to share how the sausage was being made in a townhall. Risky, but much appreciated.

Have to ask, how was the OP so on point with the details covered in the Townhall?

So will this layoff be after they build the centers of excellence for our team or will it be soon? Cause I have not trained my replacemnet

"If you're on H1B you need to leave now. If you need your paycheck you need to leave now. If you can recover from getting laid off then stick around for a severance, but you will be required to train your replacement."

Given how spot-on the OP was about the content of Karthik's speech, I'm feeling the advice quoted above is something to seriously consider.

Who gives a rat's a-s about Nielsen Caresⓣ and all that woke garbage now? Talk about virtue signaling. Amazing how these corporate elites are storing up wrath in the hearts of the people who served them and believed their bullsh-t. And yet they think they won't reap anything? No bread? There's cake in the breakroom you can take home after your exit interview.

re:"Karthik’s chilling on Marco Island Florida right now- hence the generic backdrop and clearly unpracticed script."

David Kenny is throwing Karthik a little party to congratulate him for his first mass layoff announcement.

I worked at Nielsen for almost 22 years. Got out 3 years ago and glad I did. Still know a bunch of folks that are still there including family. Company was awesone when I started and is now complete corporate woke garbage. I feel bad for all those I know that are still there but can't wait to see it go under and it will. Such a shame it has become what it has. AC Nielsen has probably spun him self to China and back by now. Such a shame a great place has become worthless in both quality and reputation.

Karthik mentioned in today’s town hall that they’ve “been doing business in India for 60 years” then sent out a company wide communication 10 minutes later stating it was 40 years.

Note to all clients … this is how Nielsen operates, and will only be getting better with the cheap(er) help now. On one side you’ll get one number, then another time something else.

Oh wait … nothings actually changed then. Just BAU in the Nielsenverse.

Most Gracenote roles in operations in COL countries (like schedule editors, imagery people etc). are already in India and to a lesser extent Poland. They have a handful of local people to cover mistakes and cover to clients about how cheaply the work is being done now.

Pretty sure most of the English speaking operations people in Europe will go. Will be interesting if customer roles end up there

Im curious what the plan is for the field staff specifically membership and field reps. Unless they roll something out that can be just mailed to a panelist they need field staff to maintain the current equipment.

We saw how well mailing out equipment worked during Covid….

Knowing what was coming, it was fun to watch the shift in his voice and body language the moment he was going to drop the axe. lol. I’m sorry if it’s not funny to some but as a struggling mom with mortgage and bills, I can’t deny and be naive about what’s happening. I’ve trained my replacement already. I’m 95% sure if it. (The other 5% is not holding onto hope, just waiting to see if they’re happy with that person.) I can easily find a job with my experience and I’m working on certifications, but I’m not giving them my severance. That will help me get ahead in payments or a well needed vacation.

And for those asking ppl to stop scaring others, know you have a special place in the unemployment line waiting for you.

At least this time Karthik did not hide the fact that there are going to be layoff and most of the capacity will be moved to India and Mexico. This strategy did not work last time though...

Update … 15 min into Kardick’s speech the OP is spot on. Main hub in India with smaller “lesser” hubs globally. Remote work going by the wayside and a focus placed on cheap, non-skilled labor.

Bye bye Nielsen. Bye bye … 👋

The sad truth here is that everything mentioned has been happing exactly as described. Trying to get us to write SOP’s for offshore India teams or to train them in our duties - all while saying they are supplements to our roles and not here to replace anyone.

Last time checked there were 4 roles posted internally for the US, and over 100+ for India. All engineering, analyst and such positions with no qualifications other than to wake up every morning and turn on a computer.

In other words … Nielsen is sketchy AF and a quickly sinking $20 billion dollar ship that REAL talent would never consider anymore. Look elsewhere, unless you’d enjoy working at the Kmart or Radio Shack of the media world.

Excellent post.

They didn't elevate Karthik to CEO because he's exceptional. To the contrary, he's scandalous and has no leadership skills. But they need him because they want someone who can work with Bangalore and negotiate with TATA. Most "leaders" in US companies, such as Google and Microsoft, and, of course Nielsen, are there to facilitate job transfer to India. You can see how basic they are otherwise. And they don't pull the strings when it comes to big decisions: the BOARD does.

Yes lets try the "fire and replace" plan again. That plan failed more than once at Nielsen over the last 15 years.

Unless you actually know these things to be a fact, you should not scare everyone. If somebody in management has leaked this information to you, you should state that to give a little credence to what you are saying otherwise, all of this is just fear mongering.
